KOONCE Extension Agent, 4-H Yolanda Alston, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bobby Alston of Hecks Grove, exhibited the Grand Champion coop of pullets at the Annual Pullet show and Sale held at the Fairgrounds last Friday. The dozen five month old Champion Coop received a high bid of $6.00 per pullet. The purchase was made by Dr. Donald R. Coffman. Norlina physician. The Reserve Champion coop of a dozen pullets was exhibited by John Harvey Hunt, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Hunt of Norlina. A high bid of $5.10 per pullet was placed and purchase made by W. D. Martin of Oine. Other exhibitors were Calvin Eugene Alston of Norlina (blue ribbon), Reginald Davis of Hecks Grove (blue ribbon), Jerome Wilson of Ridgeway (red ribbon), and Randolph Yancey of Manson (red ribbon). High bid and purchase were made for these four coops by Clinton Capps of Amos L. Capps Pulpwood Co., Inc. Also receiving blue ribbons were Ivan Alston of Embro, Shelby Gino Davis of Cool Spring, Frank J. Dortch of Drewry and Mark Somerville of Drewry. The buyers of their coops were, respectively, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Lorenz of Boxwood Nursery, Wise; F. L. Harris, retired farmer of Littleton; A. V. Bender, farmer of Ridgeway, and J. V. Edwards, farmer of Ridgeway. Consherto Venette Williams of Shocco won a white ribbon for his coop, purchased by Nick Williams, farmer of Afton-Elberon. Some 108 pullets were sold at the Annual Show and Sale at a two-year consecutive average price of $4.23. Much of the credit and sales bargaining can be attributed to R. B. (Bob) Butler, auctioneer of R. B. Butler Auction Co., Inc. When at work Butler gives his hungry-eyed buyers a men- J tal and physical workout much like a bull fighter before he moves in and takes the victory. Bids that couldn't be raised by a quarter usually got stepped up half way by just a nickel at a time. The expertise of Butler's auctioneering has been a live wire in keeping the 4-H pullet chain vital to the total county 4-H program over the past two years. All pullets exhibited were blood tested by Ed Dowd and Oren Massey of the Animal Health Division of the N. C. Department of Agriculture and judged by Dr. W. R. Prince, Extension Poultry Specialist, North Carolina State University.': Sponsor of the Show an4 Sale was the Warren Count j Fair Association. We extend our sincere thanks to th$ association for its charitable contribution, and to Mr. and Mrs. Roger Alston of Inei for their help in caring fo# the pullets prior to sale tim^ and to all others, including the news media, for theitf help and support.
