As Tar River Conference Play Begins
Norlina Lead Withers Before Assault
Within two minutes during
the fourth quarter of the
Norlina-Franklinton game
Friday night, the Blue
Waves could not contain a
Red Ram explosion that
turned the game around,
propelling the undefeated
Rams to a 42-12 victory. It
was the Tar River Conference
Opener for both teams.
Norlina's David Rowlette
ran hard during the first
half and scored two touchdowns,
one from the five and
One from the seven-yard
line. The extra points failed.
The home-standing Rams
scored a touchdown and a
safety during the first half.
Two Ram touchdowns were
called back due to penalties.
But with 9:16 remaining
on the clock, Norlina's 12-8
lead was netted as the
Tar-River conference
choice showed their power.
Franklinton scored three
touchdowns, making the
two-point conversion each
time, within two minutes.
With nine minutes left in
the game, Franklinton had
the ball on their own 20-yard
line and passed for an
80-yard touchdown. Then
they recovered a Norlina
fumble, setting up a
touchdown. During the next
series of downs, the Rams
intercepted a Norlina pass
for a touchdown. To add
insult to injury they scored
another touchdown late in
the fourth quarter for the
final 42-12 margin.
Norlina was held to 163
yards while Franklinton

For Proud Grandmother, 80, First
Ballgame Brought Thrills, Told
By HELEN HOWARD
Staff Writer
Mrs. F. F. Fleming of Manson is
proving a person is never too old to try
something new.
The 80-year-old grandmother attended
her first football game on
September 30. Her grandson, Johnnie
Fleming, quarterback for Norlina,
encouraged her to attend the NorlinaWeldon
game.
Mrs. Fleming, saying old folks don't
have any business in the night air,
caught a cold at the game and was sick
most of last week. She "didn't wear a
scarf."
Mrs. Fleming noted that Johnnie "is
crazy" about football and she found
him very good.
"I'm a basketball fan," she said,
"but I watch football games on T.V."
Norlina "has a right good little
band," she commented on other
aspects of her first experience. "And
the cheerleaders are nice."
But Mrs. Fleming thoroughly
enjoyed the game and was glad her
team won. "I was so sorry they lost last
week," she confessed.
Mrs. Fleming has four children and
12 grandchildren. Johnnie is the first
grandson to encourage her to attend a
game.
"Maybe I'll go again-but at home,"
she predicted. When told of the upcoming
homecoming game on October 21,
Mrs. Fleming, replied, "Maybe I'll go,
but I will wrap up my head."
gained 537 yards in rushing
and passing.
Ricky Bray. Michael
Young and Michael Allen
were standouts for Franklinton.
Row.lette had N9
yards rushing and 15
individual tackles for Norlina.
Franklinton is 6-0 for the
year with 1-0 in conference
play. Norlina's record is 5-2
and 0-1 in the conference.
Norlina has an open date
this Friday and will return
to the Norlina Athletic Field
against Bunn on October 21
for its annual homecoming
game.

Halftime Pep Talks
Stir Jackets, 12-0
Dressing room pep talks
at the half apparently invigorated
John Graham
Jackets who put the sting
back in the game for a 12-0
win over Saratoga.
The Friday night game
here began with both teams
battling between the 30-yard
lines without gaining control.
In the second quarter
Victor Harrison returned a
Saratoga punt for 65 yards
and a touchdown which was
called back because of a
roughing the kicker penalty.
Penalties plagued the teams
throughout the night with
Saratoga getting four for 25
yards and Graham erring
seven times for 65 yards.
At the halfway point, the
score was 0-0. But the
Jackets took to the field with
renewed energy after intermission
and gained control
of the game.
Daryl Lyles and Horace
Simes ran for touchdowns in
the third quarter. Lyles
went over from the three
and Simes exploded for a
55-yard scoring run Both
two-point conversions failed
and the score was 12-0.
The Jackets, in scoring
position several times, fumbled
the ball twice on
Saratoga's five-yard line.
John Graham had 119
yards passing and 225 yards
rushing while holding Saratoga
to 22 yards passing and
only 73 yards rushing.
Big Eric Perry, anchoring
the center of John Graham's
defensive line, let nothing
through Newcomer James
Kearney, offensive tackle,
also did an outstanding job
Coach Bill Frazier remarked
that he "was well
pleased with the performance
of Stephen Foster and
Horace Simes."

Suit Dismissal
(Continued from page 1)
Graham High School.
This action was the result
of a federal court order that
assignment of pupils to
Warren Schools remain
open until July 15. Previously
Negro leaders had filed
suit before Judge Algernon
Butler asking that 51 black
students be assigned to
Warren County schools and
that desegregation be ended
in the county's schools. By
the July 15 deadline the
number had increased to 58.
In addition 17 other Negroes
had asked assignment to
other schools.
On Nov. 15, 1963, The
Warren Record announced
that the Board of Education
would reply to a school suit
in Federal Court. Among the
parents listed as plaintiff in
the suit was Ernest A.
Turner, a parent and then
president of the local
chapter of the NAACP, and
now chairman of the Board
of Education.
The suit before Judge
Butler in Raleigh resulted in
Warren County schools
being placed under the
supervision of the federal
court which order has
continued to the present
time.
One of the Negro children
listed among the plaintiffs
were Leonard Lewis Davis,
Jr., a young negro boy
whose request for admission
to all-white Afton-Elberon
was denied by the Warren
County Board of Education
on Aug. 5.
Davis, the first Negro
student to seek admission to
an all-white school in
Warren County, was barred
from the Afton-Elberon
school after board members
contended that the admission
would not be in the best
interest of the child and
would disrupt the orderly
operation of the AftonElberon
school.

King scored one touchdown
on a 50-yard pass and also
caught a pass for the
two-point conversion
Clyde Debnam caught the
other pass of 14 yards for the
touchdown.
The defense was lead by
tackle Amos Milam, defensive
ends, Rodney Smith
and Loyd King and linebacker,
Mark Alston.
Except for two long
touchdown passes, the defense
held Davie.
