Davis visited Mrs. Imogene Arnold at the Louisburg Nursing Center on Saturday. Mr. and Mrs. Jack Hawks and Mrs. Kate Harris of Warrenton visited Mrs. Ethel Hawks at the Louisburg Nursing Center last week. Mr. and Mrs. John Perkinson of Raleigh were dinner guests of Mrs. W. H. Perkinson Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Henry Wig gins were in Winston-Salem over the weekend. They also attended a football game at Ferrum College. Mrs. Clayton Taylor attended the Fall Alumnae Council Meeting and luncheon at Peace College in Raleigh on Friday. Midshipman Butler Newman of the U. S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., spent the weekend with Mr. and Mrs. Howard Stultz and visited friends and relatives while here. Mrs. D. R Moore returned home Monday after spending some time with her daughter, Mrs. Marion Martin in Savannah, Ga. LEE Speakers Announced For District Meet Mrs. J. W. Johnson of Thomasville and Mrs. L. Murrie Lee of Wilmington will be featured speakers for the annual fall district meeting at the Norlina Baptist Church on October 18. Club members of the 14th District of the North Carolina Federation of Women's Clubs will attend. Mrs. Johnson is the state president and Mrs. Lee is the third vice-president of the NCFWC. Mrs. G. W. King of Warrenton, district president, will preside at the meeting. Hostesses for the day will be members of the Norlina Woman's Club and the Norlina Junior Woman's Club. Registration will begin at 8:45 a. m. and a coffee hour will be held from 9-9:50 a. m. The meeting will begin at 10 a. m. and luncheon will be served in the church fellowship hall. Parties Are Given For Miss Roberson Bride-Elect On September 24, Miss Joan Roberson of Oxford entertained at a luncheon for Miss Jeanne Knight, bride-elect of John Crandall Wilson, at the Holiday Inn in Henderson. Miss Knight was presented a carnation corsage upon arrival. Eleven guests enjoyed a chicken salad plate. The honoree received a hand made ceramic bowl and pitcher from the hostess. The hostess served delicious lemon chess pie and coffee. The bride-elect was presented a hand painted water colored prayer by the hostesses. Shower The home of Mrs. Wilson Fleming was the scene of a kitchen shower for Miss Jeanne Knight on October 8. Hostesses for the occasion were Mrs. Wilson Fleming and Miss Paula Fleming. Miss Knight, her mother, Mrs. James Knight and the bridegroom elect's mother, Mrs. Eugene Wilson were presented corsages made of small kitchen gadgets. Delicious refreshments of lime punch, ham biscuits, open face sandwiches, cheese wafers, peanuts and chess tarts were enjoyed by the guests. Phone 456-2121 Norlina Native Accepts Award The President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports recently presented its Honor Award to Champion Papers. Accepting the award was Stephen Read, former resident of Norlina, who is now merchandising manager for the New York based company. The award was made in recognition of Champion's publication "The Printing Salesman's Herald," Book 38 which deals with the importance of physical fitness and health in our daily lives. Read is a 1960 graduate of Norlina High School, a 1964 graduate of U.N.C. Chapel Hill. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. George Read of Norlina. Norlina Student Receives Honor Maxine Campbell, a senior at Norlina High School, has been designated as a "Commended Student" in the 23rd annual National Merit Scholarship Program according to an announcement by principal, Clint L. Hege. More than 60,000 black students took the 1976 Preliminary Scholarship Aptitude-National Merit qualifying test and indicated that they wish to participate in the 1978 Achievement Program. Only the names of 2,500 participants are honored as "commended students" on the basis of outstanding performance on the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test which was administered nationwide to high school juniors in October 1976. "Commended" students were slightly below the level required for "Semi-finalist" status and will not continue in the competition for Merit Scholarships. However, their chance for college administered financial aid is increased and they are offered admission by many of the outstanding colleges and universities. Maxine is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ned Campbell of Norlina. Meeting Slated The United Methodist Women of the Raleigh District will hold their annual meeting on Sunday, October 16, at the Trinity United Methodist Church near Louisburg. The meeting will begin at 2:30 p. m. The theme of the meeting will be "Ye Shall Be My Witnesses." Mrs. Clyde Tucker, a former missionary, will be the guest speaker. At the close of the service there will be a memorial service for all of the United Methodist Women who have died since the October, 1976 meeting.
