Agriculturally
Speaking
By L. B. HARDAGE
County Extension Chairman
Mr. William Brauer, one
of the outstanding beef
cattle producers of Warren
County, fed out 53 of his beef
calves in the year of 1976
and 1977. This group of
calves started on grain feed
in the fall of 1976 at a weight
of approximately 500 pounds
each. In September of this
year these calves were on
full feed and ready for
market. In fact, I would
guess this was the best
group of finished cattle that
I have observed in Warren
County. The majority of the
steers would grade choice
and prize and would run
from 1000 to 1100 pounds
each.
i 'O years of age this
November and December.
They were being fed 800
pounds of grain and 300
calves would be
pounds of silage per day in
September of 1977. Also had
some pasture grass if they
wanted it. These calves
were not heavily grain fed
till May of 1977.
Mr. Brauer felt that he
could make more money on
these steers by feeding out
instead of selling on feeder
calf sales last September,
due to the cheap prices of
cattle in 1976.

Sewing With Napped Fabric
Should Prove No Problem
i
By EMILY BALLINGER
Home Extension Agent
Don't let sewing with a
napped fabric scare you
away from using popular
corduroy this fall. The only
time the corduroy nap needs
to concern you is when you
cut out the garment.
And it's no problem if you
just lay all your pattern
pieces with the tops in the
same direction.
Corduroy is a napped
fabric-one with an extra
set of looped surface yarns.
And the directions those
yarns run-called the nap—
makes a difference in the
appearance of the fabric.
You can tell which way
the pile goes by running
your hand along the ribs or
wales. If the fabric feels
smooth, the pile is running
in the direction of your hand
movement. But if it feels
rough, the pile is running the
Could This Be
Year Of Freedom
For Our 4-Hers?
By G. W. KOONCE
Extension Agent. 4-H
Could it happen? Could
1978 be the year that
community 4-H clubs are led
by volunteer leaders? Could
1978 be the year the clubs
become independent, free of
the tyranny of agent-made
decisions and agent-planned
programs'1
We can make it happen.
We already have several
community clubs with adult
leaders performing some
jobs in the club. The
problem is hov/ to get these
people to accept total
leadership for the club and
how to get them to take
control
One good way is to help
the leaders learn some good
methods of program planning.
Help them see how
they can run a club without
having to be up front giving
a program. In the "Design
Your Own Clover" method,
each youth lists the things
they want to learn, their
hobbies, things they'd like to
do for fun. and things they
could do in the community.
Then, the individual ideas
are put together to make a
plan for the total group
A special meeting may be
held for parents and youth.
If it is a first-time get-together,
someone may need
to make a general presentation
on 4-H The slide sets
"4-H Is" and "If" or the
movies "You Are Richer
For It." or "4-H in South
Carolina" are all good ways
to do this. The parents and
youth present could then
plan their programs for the
coming months with different
people, parents, youth,
or resource people being
asked to assume responsibility
for different programs
and activities.
Let's gain independence
from the idea that only a
"lesson" constitutes a 4-H
meeting. Really, gatherings
where youths "do" things
are the most ideal club
programs. It's fine for a
club to spend their meeting
time making speeches,
presenting demonstrations,
making things, going on
tours, or working in the
community.
Let 1978 be the year for
independence in 4-H community
clubs in Warren
County!

Paper Drive Set

The Wise-Paschall 4-H

opposite direction.
When the nap runs up,
you'U get a dark rich color.
But when the nap runs
down, you'll have a lighter,
shadow-like look. Also, the
nap running down the fabric
usually wears better.
Obviously, the direction of
the nap makes a difference
in the color of the garment.
So watch to see that all the
pattern pieces run the same
direction.
There is no right or wrong
way for the nap to go-it's
all up to' your personal
preference. So don't let the
nap question keep you from
taking advantage of the
great corduroy looks this
fall.
At-Home Sewing
With Permanent Press
Good results can be
achieved with permanent
press fabric for home
sewing if a few simple
guidelines are followed.
First, check pattern envelope
to be sure a
permanent press fabric is
suitable, choose a style with
straight lines and minimum
seams and details. Avoid
frills and fullness. Cottoncovered
polyester thread is
desirable: it "gives" with
the fabric.
Veshrink zipper, tape
. any interfacings used.
a j prevent seam puckering
when garment is laundered,
relax the tension on the
sewing machine and guide
fabric through very gently,
without forcing or pulling.
Ease zipper in to reduce
chance of puckering. Steam
press seams with an iron,
testing first with a scrap of
material for amount of heat
which can be applied. For
care after use. wash the
garment with other permanent
press clothes. When
tumble drying, promptly
remove the item as soon as
the appliance stops, to
prevent wrinkling.

Check Ventilation
Before Insulating
By BERTHA FORTE
Home Extension Agent
When you start adding
insulation to the attic of an
older home, you're going to
have to make sure that the
attic is well ventilated.
Many of the homes built
before insulation was necessary
have no attic fans.
If the attic isn't vented
right, you might end up with
moisture problems. What
happens is that any moisture
that accumulates in
your attic gets trapped in
the insulation and has no
place to evaporate -unless
you put in vents.
The vents should be
installed in both the overhang
of the roof and at the
peak of each end wall.
Houses with no roof overhangs
need larger vents at
the end wall peaks-or
power ventilators.
So. as you add insulation,
add attic vents, too. That is,
if your older home doesn't
have them already.
