Blue Waves Drown Bunn In Homecoming Contest The Norlina Blue Waves held Bunn to only one first down and 36 total offensive yards, enabling the Waves to slash the Bulldogs, 26-6, during Friday night's game. During the first period, both teams gathered their wits while exchanging th ball with no score. Hunter kicked the extra point which was good, and Norlina began the fourth quarter 20-0. Johnnie Fleming ran in from the four on a quarterback keeper in the fourth quarter for the score but the extra-point kick attempt failed. Bunn's only score in the game was a 94-yard punt return during the final period. Dennis Tabron sprinted the field for the sixpointer but the two-point conversion was no good. Rowlett chalked up 164 yards on 24 carries for the night. The team had 255 yards rushing with 63 yards in passing. Fleming completed five of 10 for the yardage. Bunn was held to 31 yards rushing on 26 carries with one for seven in passing having three interceptions. Defensive standouts for Norlina were Charlie BulI lock and David Rowlett with 12 individual tackles each and Clifton Greene with 10. Norlina is now 6-2 for the season and 1-1 in conference play. (Staff Photo) Franklinton Tops Jackets, On Inside Track To Title Franklinton was practicularly assured of a tie for first place, in the Tar River Conference Friday night as they outclassed John Graham, 29-0, at Franklinton Friday night. Allen Holmes' soccerstyle kicks and Ricky Bray's individual effort took the sting out of the Jackets, who dropped their first conference game. Early in the first quarter after a Ram fumble John Graham moved the ball to the Ram nine-yard line but a fumble on the play was recovered by Franklinton. Later the Rams intercepted a Lyles pass returning it to the Jacket 18. The next -play -gave the Rams another first down on the JG three. With 2:06 gone in the first period, Bray rolled around his right end eluding all tackles for the score. Holmes' kick for the PAT was good and Franklinton led 7-0. Following tLe kickoff, the Rams intercepted on their own 43 setting up a drive and Warriors Suffer Loss; Seek To Rebound Today The Warren Academy Warriors could not scalp N.E.W. Academy's offense during last Thursday's game and were defeated 19-0. In the first quarter, N.E.W. pinned the Warriors in a hole and later recovered a fumble within the 20-yard line to set up a touchdown. The point after was good, giving N.E.W. a 7-0 lead. Good rushing by N.E.W. gave the opponents two touchdowns in the second quarter but the extra point attempts failed. The halftime score was 19-0. The two remaining quarters were tug-o-war with both teams exchanging the football without scoring. N.E.W. gained 131 yards rushing for the game, completing three of 11 passes for 40 yards. Warren Academy netted 53 yards rushing with Victor Coleman accounting lor144 of the total. Tim Capps, Warren Academy quarterback, was 9 for 15 in passing for 90 yards. Scott Williams caught four passes for 62 yards. Other outstanding performances for Warren Academy were turned in by Greg Spraggins, who recovered a N E W. fumble, and Timmy Royster, who intercepted a pass. Defensively, Victor Coleman, Todd Wemyss and Tim Capps led the Warriors with individual tackles and many assists. Today (Thursday) the Warriors take on Hobgood at 3:30 p. m. at "The Cow Palace." Franklinton had mounted a 23-0 lead. John Graham fumbled following the kick-off on their own 14 with Franklinton recovering. But a clip penalty set the Rams back on the JG 20. Jim Reynolds ran back to the original line of scrimmage. The seconddown pass was incomplete. JG held the Rams during the ensuing downs and took over on their own seven. JG completed one play before the buzzer and went into the final quarter underdogs at 23-0. The Jackets were forced to punt on the second play in the fourth quarter. Lyles bobbled the snap and Franklinton took over on the JG four with 11:30 remaining to play. The Rams scored off right tackle on the second down. The point after was wide to the left but the Rams merged ahead 29-0. Victor Harrison returned the ensuing kickoff to the JG 20. The Jackets were unable to drive further and Lyles punted. John Graham recovered the fumbled punt on their own 41 but were unable to score after setting up a drive to the 25. The game ended at 29-0. John Graham is 5-3 and 1-1 in conference play. Franklinton remains undefeated with an 8-0 record, 3-0 in conference, with one conference game against Louisburg remaining. John Graham will host Bunn in a Tar-River Conference match Friday night at the John Graham Athletic Field. 1 Face Bunn Today Hawkins Bulldogs Roar Past 2 Foes Garson Jackson and Malcolm Evans annihilated Ftanklinton last Thursday afternoon with a tremendous rushing display to give Hawkins Junior High a 40-0 win. Jackson intercepted a Franklinton pass and returned it 45 yards for a touchdown with Elam running the conversion. Randy Garrett completed an 11yard pass to Jackson for a touchdown and the two joined again for the conversion pass. Elam intercepted a pass and completed a 40-yard run for a touchdown, adding the extra points on a run. He also carried the ball over the goal line from the five and eluded opponents for the two-point conversion. Roscoe Cheek was another standout for the Hawkins Bulldogs. He scored from the ten-yard line and Williams, ran the two-point play, giving the Bulldogs their fifth win. Amos Milam and Loyd King were consistent on defense during the game. In last Tuesday's pamp I against Louisburg, runs by Tony Williams, Roscoe Cheek and Loyd King enabled the Bulldogs to remain undefeated as they toppled Louisburg 36-0. Tony Williams returned a kick-off 78 yards for a touchdown and scored another from the two-yard line, making a two-point conversion on a run. Cheek scored from the six-yard line and ran one conversion while King caught a seven-yard pass from Garrett good for a touchdown. Jackson caught a pass from Garrett for the point after. Mark Alston caused added insult when he recovered a blocked punt for a touchdown. Amos Milam, Mark Alston, Hubert Perry and Loyd King were leaders in the defense which kept the Louisburg team scoreless. Hawkins plays at Bunn today (Thursday) and will be back at home .against North Warren on November 3 at 5 p m. on the John Graham f'eld. 1
