November Electric
Bills To Be Higher
The "approved fuel
charge" for Carolina Power
& Light Co. retail customers
in North Carolina will be
$4.12 per thousand kilowatthours
(kwh) on bills during
November.
This represents an increase
of 22 cents per thousand
kwh over the price of
electricity last month, according
to James M. Davis,
Jr., CP&L's manager of
rates and service practices.
Davis said that under a
formula established by the
North Carolina Utilities
Commission, the approved
fuel charge in any given
month is based upon an
average of CP&L's documented
cost of fuel for generation
in the third, fourth
and fifth preceding months.
The charge during November,
he said, reflects
increased fuel expenses
incurred during June, July
and August when the
demand for electricity was
very high, requiring the
extended operation of older
and less efficient generating
units.
Warren Road Fatalities Climb
To 17 With Weekend Smashup
Warren County's traffic
fatality record continued to
climb this week with the
death of Ms. Ruby Kearney
on Sunday. Her death was
the 17th automobile fatality
in Warren County this year.
According to Highway
Patrolman W. C. Palmer,
Ms. Kearney was injured in
a traffic accident Sunday
afternoon about 1:30 p. m.
on RPR 1107 in front of the
residence of Dr. L. B.
Henderson, Jr.
Palmer explained that the
driver of a 1966 Pontiac was
Andrew Lee Perry of
Henderson. Ms. Kearney,
22, and her three-year-old
daughter, Amy, both of
Warrenton, were passengers
in the vehicle.
According to the trooper's
report, an unknown vehicle
ran Perry off the roadway
into a ditch. The unidentified
vehicle was meeting
Perry left of center.
Perry's vehicle swerved
and struck head-on a brick
driveway retaining wall.
Ms. Kearney received
head injuries in the crash
and her daughter was
hospitalized with "incapacitating
injuries," according
to the report. „
Trooper Palmer noted the
child was thrown from the
back seat into the front.
Perry was hospitalized with
"non-incapacitating injuries."
Palmer said all the
occupants of the car were
taken to Warren General
Hospital and transferred to
Duke Hospital.
Ms. Kearney died as a
result of her injuries about
three hours later, bringing
the year's fatality record
here in road mishaps to 17,
four more than ever
recorded in one year.
On Tuesday, Trooper
Palmer reported that Perry
had been released from
Duke on Monday and that
the daughter was listed in
satisfactory condition.
Charges of improper
brakes and death by vehicle
following negligence of a
motor vehicle violation were
lodged against Perry.
Funeral services for Ms.
Kearney will be held at 2 p.
m. Friday from Coley
Springs Baptist Church with
the Rev. Luther Brown,
officiating. Burial will be in
the church cemetery.
The family will meet
friends at Harris-Turner
Funeral Home today
(Thursday) from 7 to 8 p. m.
She is survived by her
daughter, Amy Catnia Kearney
of the home; her
mother, Mrs. Anna Kearney
Davis of Richmond, Va.;
two sisters, Deloris Perrv
and Yvonne Kearney of
Warrenton; four brothers,
John Kearney, Jr., Vance
Kearney, Alfred Kearney,
all of Patterson, N. J., and
Clement Kearney of Henderson.
Other Accidents
A fender bump-up was
reported by the highway
patrol on Sunday afternoon
about 3:35 p. m. at the
intersection of US 158 and
the Warren Plains road.
Trooper V. R. Vaughan
reported that Eddie Brown
was traveling east on the
Warren Plains road and
stopped at the intersection.
He then pulled out in the
path of Charlie U. Cates,
operating a Dodge station
wagon, hitting the fender of
the Cates auto.
Vaughan said Brown
indicated he did not see the
Cates vehicle approaching.
No injuries were reported
in the accident. Vaughan
speculated about $300 damage
to each auto.
Brown was charged with
failure to yield right of way.
