Local Contributions To Match WVSP Public Radio Grant Urged Merchants and associations in Warren, Nash, Franklin, Vance, Halifax and surrounding counties are being challenged to match a $200 grant offered by public radio station WUNC, Chapel Hill, to public radio station WVSP, Warrenton. The announcement was made Nov. 12 by WUNC general manager Gary Shivers to WVSP general manager Valeria Lee. Both regional stations are members of the National Public Radio network (NPR) and, as public radio stations, cannot rely on advertisers for their support. WUNC's challenge to area businesses is good through the month of November. WVSP will use the WUNC and business grants in December to underwrite the locally-produced children's program, "Tickle - Me Think." Ms. Lee explained that $200 will pay for two weeks of "Tickle-Me-Think," the WVSP program for young children which usually airs from 9-9:30 a. m., Monday through Friday The program, previously heard in area homes, schools and pre-school centers, is not being aired currently due to a lack of underwriting. "Significant community good will can come from public underwriting of radio," Ms. Lee suggests, "since the spotlight is on the organization's contribution to the community rather than its specific product." "Public radio stations, like commercial stations, have large operating expenses," Ms. Lee notes. "Major outlays each month include rent, electricity, telephone, maintenance, training and producers' salaries. Some of WUNCf's costs are subsidized by its affiliation with the University of North Carolina, whereas WVSP is one of a handful of public radio stations in the country that relies on the community for support." WVSP's music format is primarily jazz, while WUNC's is classical. Both stations, on the air since Amtrak To Stop In Henderson HENDERSON - The National Railroad Passenger Corporation (Amtrak) will resume its stop in Henderson, rail officials announced last week. The decision to renew passenger service in Henderson was made following negotiations in which Norlina, in neighboring Warren County, had also sought a i passenger stop. Presently, there are no stops along the line from Petersburg, Va., to Raleigh. . Service was earlier projected to begin Jan. 1, 1978; however, Amtrak officials said later in the week that the date was too early. Amtrak told community officials and DOT representatives last Wednesday that the government owned service will pay approximately 50 per cent of the cost of building a new $30,000 station in the city. Joseph Vranich, Amtrak special representative for public affairs, said he "anticipates no problems with Henderson acquiring service after they make their application for funds." To receive passenger service, Henderson will be required to submit an application for funds under a 50-50 joint station program in which Amtrak would pay $15,000 of the total cost. The application must be approved by several offices before the final allocation is made. Under the agreement reached between Amtrak and the city, Henderson would have a Plediglas shelter with a direct telephone line hook-up to Jacksonville, Fla. Passengers wishing to ride the train could call Tax Filing Notice North Carolina taxpayers filing estimated tax returns should make any necessary name and address changes on the pre-addressed mailing labels on the fourth quarter voucher due to the Internal Revenue Service by January 15, 1978. Changes made on the pre-addressed labels should also be reported to the postal service.
