SMOKE 1 SIGNALS News Of Warren Academy Time passes so quickly at Warren Academy that the second grading period will soon b^| over. After the Thanksgiving holidays we only have a few days left of the second grading period!! Everyone, teachers as well as students, is looking forward to the upcoming holiday. We all need a break and a little relaxation! We want to take this time to thank all of our friends and patrons for the help and support given to us at Warren Academy. Without the support, Warren Academy would not be what it is today. A special thanks to all of you at this time and have a safe and happy holiday November 17. the student council officers of Warren Academy, Jeff Andrews, Burges Burrows, John Burgess, and Denise Cheek attended a Carolina Conference Association meeting of the student councils at Enfield Academy. The purposes for the organization of this meeting and the other meetings to be held in February and April were to bring the member academies to a closer relationship; to exchange ideas about different activities taking place in the academies, such as fund raising projects; to create interest in extra-curricular activities as well as athletics; and to inform and educate the public about the activities taking place in the academies in their community. At this meeting officers were elected, and a constitution committee was elect ed. The constitution committee is composed of all the newly elected officers with the addition of Jeff Andrews from our own Warren Academy. After lunch the counselors talked with the students about holding academic contests. The ideas were well received, and it was agreed that further discussion on these activities would be held at the meeting February 9 at Halifax Academy. The officers of the Warren Academy Student Council were accompanied to the meeting by their sponsor, Mrs. Nancy Williams. Our student council was in charge of our assembly program on Wednesday, Nov. 23. The Rev. Bill Crouch was our speaker for the program. A special brochure will be sent home this week. It will be the Warren Academy Brochure, and the information in it stresses the importance of education with the concern to give the child the best possible education. Please parents, check with your child to be sure that you get this information. Don't forget our first basketball game of the season at Council Christian Academy near Durham, Nov. 29, at 6:30 p. m. And on Wednesday, Nov. 30, at 4 p. m. the jayvee girls will be playing at Enfield Academy. Our players need your support. Come to the games and the players will do their best to give you a winner! NHS Football Team Honored At Dinner The Norlina High School: football team was honored at adinner by the Blue Wave supporters on Thursday night. All of the football players, coaches and some of the supporters attended. Tommy Frazier welcomed the group and Chip Gums offered the invocation before everyone enjoyed a turkey dinner. The Rev. Jim Hebel, pastor of the Zion and Jerusalem churches, spoke to those attending. Mr. Frazier introduced special guests and those who had made the dinner possible. The football team was awarded individual certificates of achievement by the coaches. The All- Conference players-Chip Gums, Marvin Jones, Charlie Bullock and David Rowlett-were recognized along with the player of the year, David Rowlett Coach Spragins presented a trophy for the offensive lineman of the year. Coach Price recognized each of the seniors with a trophy. They are Allen Hargrove, Charlie Bullock, Marvin Jones, Larry Vaughan, Reginald Jordan and David Rowlett. Coach Settles presented the Team-Before-Self award to Johnnie Fleming. This award had never before been given. Coach Fuller recognized David Rowlett as the most valuable player of the year and Tommy Frazier for helping the team and being an outstanding supporter. Rowlett was awarded a trophy and Frazier, a plaque. Frazier then read a poem he had written about the 1977 Norlina football team. On Campus News From John Graham By Terry Thompson When colder weather sets in, so does the sluggishness that goes along with it. Already everyone huddles together at break; with the more ambitious seeking out the pecans. But in any seniors' view, one more season closer to "the day" is welcomed. November 14, a representative from UNC-G came to talk to prospects. November 15, Miss Rebecca Neece and Mrs. L. G. Hawkins of the English department along with Hawkins Honor Roll Announced The principal and faculty of Hawkins Jr High School announce the honor roll for the first nine weeks grading period. A student must have grades of 90 and above in all subjects for their name to appear on this list. The list o includes: Ninth grade: Rhonda Bowman, Thomas Fleming, Jan Jordan. Wanda Perry, and Tammy Roberts Eighth grade: Erwin Ayscue, Gladys Banks. Margaret Foster. Vanessa Furtick. Valarie Gaither and William Perkinson. Seventh grade: Gail Ayscue, Lisa Green, Ava Williams and Lenora Young. approximately 90 students went to see William Shakespeare's classic. "Romeo and Juliet," in the North Hills Shopping Center in Raleigh. (I, myself, went and enjoyed every minute of it.) November 16, Mr. Gottschalk of the American Legion spoke at an assembly in the auditorium on American Education Week. He stressed the importance of a good education in relation to making it in this job-oriented society of ours. The Jackets basketball teams will face the Vance Senior High Vikings this Tuesday for a pre-season scrimmage. The boys will be at home .and the lady Jackets at Vance. Both teams this year purchased new uniforms so besides playing good, we look good, too": Season opens with a home game Dec. 2 against Scotland Neck Girls' home games will begin at 6:30 p.m. this year as opposed to 7 p.m. last year so that on week nights students and players can get home earlier December 1. the senior class will order invitations It's starting to look like the beginning of the end! The Monogram Club is selling school jackets, so buy one and support the Yellow Jackets Girl Scout Troop 172 has been reactivated under the leadership of Jackie Cameron and assistant leaders Mrs. Eleanor Clark Jones and Mrs. Mary Spruill.
