Mrs. John Day and son, Gus, and Jack Mabry of Henderson and the Rev. Gilbert Mabry of Dallas, Tex., visited Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Knight on Saturday night. Mrs. Knight's niece, Mrs. Marshall Sasser, of Smithfield was their guest for the weekend. Ronald Rose of Cary visited his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Pete Rose, on Friday. Mr. and Mrs. Robert "Sonny" Goodbar of Durham were guests of Mr. and Mrs. Roger Norwood Sunday afternoon. J. R. Lloyd of Congress Heights, Md., visited Mrs. Maggie Adcock on Sunday. Mr. Lloyd was enroute to Florida, and J. L. Thaxton joined him for the trip. Mrs. W. S. Hicks and sister, Mrs. Ann Bowls of Florida were in Fayetteville over the weekend visiting relatives. Sunday, J. T. Fleming returned to MCV Hospital in Richmond, Va., where he is having tests made and possible surgery. Mr. and Mrs. Henry Wiggins were in WinstonSalem over the weekend to visit Mr. and Mrs. Buck Wiggins and family. Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Knight were in Suffolk, Va., for a few days last week to visit Mrs Elmira Brewer and to attend the funeral of Mrs. Sarah Brewer. Mrs. Edith Cawthorne and Mr and Mrs. Elmer Davis are visiting the Davis' daughter and her family, Mr. and Mrs Alexander, in Norfolk, Va. Mrs. Lillian Kilian is spending the Thanksgiving holiday with her daughter, Ms. Cheryl Kilian, in Hampton, Va. Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Thaxton and Debbie of Goldsboro and Bob Thaxton and William of Wilson were weekend guests of Mr. and Mrs B A. Thaxton. Thanksgiving Eve Service Planned The Norlina Baptist and United Methodist churches are having a joint worship service on Wednesday, Thanksgiving Eve, beginning at 7:30 p.m. at the Norlina United Methodist Church. The Rev. Elton Cooke will bring the Thanksgiving message. Circles To Meet The Norlina Baptist WMU Circles will meet Monday, Nov. 28. At 10 a.m. the Mattie Pridgen Circle will meet in the home of Mrs. W. O Reid and the Lola Sue Circle will meet with Mrs. Ora Moore. At 8:00p.m. theOlga Hood Circle will meet with Mrs. Eva Ayscue and the Annie Armstrong Circle will meet in the home of Mrs. Ann Mulchi Dividend Declared The Board of Directors of Peoples Bank and Trust Company has declared a regular quarterly dividend of 24 cents per share and an extra year-end dividend of 8 cents per share on the bank's common stock for the fourth quarter. The 32-cent dividend brings the total dividends paid in 1977 to $1.02. This represents a 9.2 percent increase in cash dividends paid over 1976 after giving effect to the increase in number of shares outstanding as a result of the 20 percent stock dividend declared in November, 1976. The new dividend is payable Dec. 30, 1977 to shareholders of record on Dec. 21, 1977. The ex-dividend date was set for Dec. 15, 1977. At its regular meeting, the Board of Directors established a new policy of payment of dividends. According to Chairman and President William H. Stanley, the bank has historically paid an extra year-end dividend on its common stock but will alter that practice in 1978. Norlina Girl Wins Ride In Big Parade Miss Surena Dawn Evans of Norlina, seven-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Tom Evans, was named a winner of the WRAL 101 radio contest last Wednesday. As a winner, Surena rode on the station's float in the Raleigh Christmas parade Saturday. The Raleigh radio station sponsored a contest asking contestants to write why they wanted to be in the parade. Surena wrote that she was born in Portsmouth, Ohio, and her mother was a Virginia Tech fan. She included that she learned the word "Gobbler" long before "Buckeye." She noted she had been a mascot cheerleader at Norlina High School for four years making her a veteran of parades. In naming her winner. Bob Inskeep, morning man of the radio station, said Surena was the only contestant who confessed Citizens Enjoy Annual Dinner The Senior Citizens had their annual Thanksgiving dinner at the Lutheran Church last Thursday. The assembly room was decorated with pictures of turkeys and many other Thanksgiving symbols. Each member carried a covered dish There was a large assortment of deliciious food which everyone enjoyed The Rev. Elton Cooke, who has been an inspiration to the senior citizens and who has given much time for helping them, showed slides of the trip to Charlottesville, Va. These slides included pictures of the members and the lovely fail scenery of the area. Several of the members helped Oscar Baker present present a skit, "Casey At The Bat" that was enjoyed by everyone. At the present time Mrs. Joyce Mabry is the president of the club and the enrollment has reached 104 members. Over 60 members participated in the Thanksgiving celebration. The Rev. Elton Cooke invited the senior citizens to attend services in the Baptist Church in Norlina Sunday, Nov. 20. Fifty-six members attended and enjoyed the fellowship and the dinner which followed in the assembly room of the church. Among the guests were the Methodist minister. the Rev. Curtis Campbell and his family. Service Slated A Christingle service will be held at The Church of the Good Shepherd in Ridgeway Nov. 27 at 3:30 p. m. This service comes from an old Moravian custom for Advent and Christmas. It is widely used in Europe. The service is being held on Advent Sunday at the historic church, now listed on the National Register of Historic Places by the United States Department of the Interior. Minister Appointed To Norlina Methodist NORLINA- United Methodists here have a new pastor. Bishop Robert M. Blackburn, Raleigh, has announced the appointment of the Rev. Curtis W. Campbell, Raleigh, to the Norlina United Methodist Church, US 1, Norlina. He replaces Rev. C. Nathan Burgess who has moved to Tennille, Ga. Campbell, a native of Raleigh, holds a Bachelor of Music Education degree from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and recently graduated from Southeastern Seminary, Wake Forest. He has served as interim minister at Berry's Grove Baptist Church, north of Durham and at Roanoke Island Baptist Church, Manteo. He has also served as a Minister of Music at Berry's Grove Church; Magnolia Street Baptist Church, Greensboro; and Westover United Methodist Church, Raleigh. Campbell was a member of "The New Hermeneutics," a Christian musical group of the Circus Tent Christian Ministries, Kitty Hawk, for four years, and served as musical director for one summer. The new pastor moved to Norlina on Nov. 16 with his wife, Deborah Holland Campbell, formerly of Clinton, and their three-month old son, Colin. Campbell began his service there on Nov. 20. Norlina United Methodist Church, which now has approximately 300 members, was founded in 1910 and was orginally called Community Chapel. Warren County launched the observance of Farm-City Week with a tour of Norlina Manufacturing Company, Inc. Four tours were conducted through the plant with 37 people getting a look at the plant operation. Last Thursday's tour was planned and arranged by Tom Peele, Warren County Farm-City Week chairman and Miss £mily Ballinger, Home Economics Extension Agent. Plant manager Bob Boher and his wife assisted the tour. Thomas Alva Edison, inventor of the light bulb and the phonograph, patented 1,093 inventions in his lifetime.
