» ' V ^ Former Warrenton Man Gets Award RALEIGH-Arthur Reynolds Price of Durham and art curator Joseph Curtis Sloan of Chapel Hill were honored for distinguished services in their fields Monday night at the 14th annual North Carolina Awards ceremonies. Price, a Warren County native and former resident of Warrenton, is James B. Duke professor of English at Duke University. He was given the literary award and Sloan received the art award. The awards were presented by Gov. Jim Hunt to Price, Sloan and three other Tar Heels in a ceremony that marked the beginning of the 64th annual Culture Week observance in the state. The other awards went to Elizabeth Duncan Koontz of Salisbury for public service/ Reginald Glennis Mitchiner of Greensboro for science and Jonathan Williams of Highlands and Cumbria, England, for fine arts. Price has taught at Duke University since 1959. His first novel, "A Long and Happy Life," published in 1962, won him the William Faulkner Award for a notable first novel. He has worked as a writer in residence at the University of North Carolina and the University of Kansas. Among his numerous awards was a 1971 award in literature from the American Academy and the National Institute of Arts and Letters. Price has two aunts living in Warrenton. They are Mrs. Lula McCraw Gay and Mrs. Herman Rod well. Supporters of 4-H activities will be recognized during the program. On hand will be George W. Koonce, 4-H extension agent, and Glenn Woolard, assistant 4-H extension agent along with Miss Emily Ballinger and Mrs. Bertha Forte, home economics extension agents. Warren Academy first graders who led Mrs. Wayne Young's class in a traditional Pilgrim-Indian feast. • (Staff Photo) * Fire Destroys Frame Home In Inez A frame building, the home of Peter Lindsley Alston of Inez, was completely destroyed by fire on Wednesday afternoon of last week The Warrenton Rural Fire Department dispatched a crashwagon and nine firemen to Inez at 4:50 p. m. to assist members of the Inez Rural Fire Department. Areola also dispatched a truck and a number of firemen to the scene of the fire. A A Wood, chief of the Warrenton Rural Company, said this week that no one was present at the Alston home when the fire was discovered He said that he did not know how the fire started and had not been informed of the estimated loss of the building Shearin Named To Who's Who A Hollister resident. Joe Allen Shearin, is among 17 N. C. Wesleyan College students named in the national listing of America's most outstanding university and college campus leaders. Application Deadline Friday is the cut-off date for accepting applications for low interest emergency loans made available to drought stricken farmers in North Carolina by the Farmers Home Administration. The application deadline was designated earlier by the federal interagency Drought Emergency Coordinating Committee. Warren County was one of 56 counties in the state severely crippled by extensive drought conditions this summer. Low interest loans will be made available to cover losses and provide additional credit to eligible farmers in the designated areas The original deadline was extended from Sept. 31 to Dec. 2 by the emergency coordinating committee.
