Saws Have Their Costs Chainsaws are spitting sawdust around more and more wood lots and home CARDS OF THANKS I would like to thank everyone for their kind ness during the hour of sorrow and for telegrams, calls, cards, money and flowers. May God bless all of you. THOMAS BASKETT The family of Ronald W. Bullock would like to thank each and everyone for the many acts of kindness shown while Ronald was hospitalized and since his return home. Special thanks to the Warren County High School and its staff May God bless each and every one of you. THE BULLOCK FAMILY The Ridge way Volunteer Fire Department wishes to thank all of its patrons who supported their 1981 fund raising efforts so generous ly. We will be looking forward to serving you in 1982. The Warren County High School football team along with its coaches and staff would like to thank the merchants and patrons of Warren County for the contributions for the pre game meal on Nov. 13, 1981. Again our thanks. In Memoriam Lillian, mother, you left us one year ago, but you will always be in our heart. REV. DR. JAMES T. RUSSELL AND FAMILY grounds these days as more Americans become saw owners. The primary motivation is savings in labor and money. There is no question that the noisy little monsters save labor. Remember the old crosscut saw? No doubt the chainsaws are helping to save on fuel costs for many homeowners who are using wood as a primary heating fuel. But the saws, in addition to their purchase price, have a cost of their own — fixed and operating costs. An analysis by one authoritative source puts this cost at $1.31 per hour. This figure includes some fixed cost items that most individual saw owners probably wouldn't consider — taxes, interest and insurance, for example. The combined cost of these three items came to 29 cents per hour, according to figures used in the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) analysis. Repairs to the $525,17-in. saw used for the study was set at 26 cent per hour over the 2,000-hour operating life of the saw. Fuel and oil came to a combined 46 cents per hour. Some other items, such as spark plug, file, chain and bar costs totaled 30 cents an hour. How much your saw costs depends on the purchase price, the saw's durability and how you're operating it. Cabbage A pound of cabbage yields four cups of raw, shredded cab bage or about "three cups of cooked, shredded cabbage. "A family," says Dr. Leo Hawkins, extension human development specialist at North Carolina State University, "is a factory where people are made." "As we understand the feelings, needs and patterns in the family factory, we then begin to build a true human being," Hawkins elaborates. And there is a great deal involved in that human be ing, says Hawkins. He must take care of his physical condition; be real and honest to self and others; take risks; be crea tive and competent and know how to change when the situation calls for it. "When you add all this up, you have a physically healthy, mentally alert, feeling, loving, playful, authentic, creative and productive human being," the specialist says. There are four aspects of family life which help ensure the development of such a person and a strong family. In a vital and nurturing family, self worth is high; communication is direct and honest; rules are appropriate and flexible 1077% ^pflfBWB: L?" mneY "Wket rates. ^SSSrlSiSSi: or more, you can r All this rate in for tes. "No matter what kind of problem a family has," Hawkins says, "the prescription is the same. To relieve family pain, some way has to be found to change these four key factors." f These things are true, Hawkins says, whether the family is a natural one; a one-parent one; a blended step or adoptive one or an institutional one with a group of children. So although the outer shell of the "family factor ies" may differ, the inside product and the formula for creating it, are much the same.
