Garden Club Members Get Fresh Start Summer vacation came to an end, and membera of the Town 'N Country Garden Club met in the home of Mrs. Cora Hawkins, hostess, for a "Fresh Start." Mrs. Sophese Hawkins, president, presided. Hie highlight of the meeting was the reports of Mrs. Sophese Hawkins and Mrs. Annie Mae Alston, delegates attending the 47th An nual Convention of the Federation of Garden Clubs of N. C., which met at the Royal Villa in Raleigh, August 1-3. They reported that the opening of the Garden Gate, the hospitality hour, business session, workshop on "Inexpen sive Ways to Cook and Decorate," annual banquet and memorial service were impres sive. The memorial service remembered more than 20 members who had died since the 1961 convention. Mrs. Virginia Levister, 1981 president was one sadly missed. In the business session, initial plans were made for 1982-83. The president appointed the following com mittees: horticulture, Mrs. Elizabeth Ward; conservation, Mrs. Cora Hawkins; beautifica tion, Mrs. Georgia Exum; scrapbook, Mrs. Mary Powell; yearbook, Mrs. Gertrude Hawk ins; and projects, Mrs. Annie M. Alston. Hostesses listed for the year were: October, Mrs. Mary Jordan; November, Mrs. Annie Mae Alston; December, Bin. Elizabeth Brown; January, Mrs. Sallie Brown; February, Mrs. Georgia Exum; March, Mrs. Gertrude Hawk ins; April, Mrs. Sophese Hawkins; May, Mrs. Mary Powell; and June, Mrs. Elizabeth Ward. During the social period the hostess, Mrs. Cora Hawkins, served a delightful repast and a choice of drinks. Cards Of Thanks Trooper W. C. Palmer of the N. C. Highway Patrol would like to ex press his appreciation to the county's govern ment and also the citizens of the county for their loyal support during his temporary absence from the patrol. I would like to thank all my friends and rela tives for the phone calls, cards, visits, prayers and all other acts of kindness extended during my stay in the Halifax Memorial Hos pital in Roanoke Rapids and since my return home.
