Auto Chase Covers Two Counties By KAMM1E MICHAEL In The Durham Morning Herald HENDERSON - Police officers chased a car driver they be lieved was armed and holding a hostage for more than 35 miles early Tuesday morning before stopping him at a road block in Warren County. The woman in the car, whose name was not released, was not hurt, said Officer S. M. Par nell of the Henderson Police Department. Parnell said the in cident apparently stemmed from a domestic argument. The man was not charged with kidnapping. No one was injured during the chase. Parnell said officers were told to watch for a 1982 brown Mazda, which had been report ed stolen Monday night. They also were told that the driver of the car may have forced a woman into the car with him after an argument, Parnell said. "We didn't know if she had gotten into the car of her own free will or if she had been forced." "I saw the car on East Andrews Avenue about 12:15 a. m.," Parnell said. "I was going east and he was going west. I turned around and got behind him. When I tried to stop him, he took off." Parnell chased the car into Vance County, then north into Warren Coun ty through the towns of MansonandNorlina. "We were on 15 or 20 different rural roads during the chase," Par nell said. "The top speed I registered during the chase was 85 miles per hour." "The driver was trying to wreck patrol cars," he said. "He'd go into the left lane beside the patrol car, get in front of us and then slam on his brakes." Officers set up a road block in Warren County, but the car went around it. The car slowed down in Warren County. "On the back roads, he was lost," Parnell said. "He was driving around in circles." "He was going real slow, but due to her (the passenger) being in the car we couldn't take the car off the road. We just tried to trail along behind him," he said. After an hour-long chase, officers finally stopped the car at a roadblock on U. S. 1, one mile north of Soul City in Warren County. "He couldn't have gone much further. His gas gauge was on empty when we stopped him," Parnellsaid. Officers arrested Gary Bernard Williams, 24, of Rt. 8, Henderson and charged him with driving with his license permanently revoked, speeding 85 mph in a 55 mph zone, driving left of center, failure to stop for blue lights and siren, driving at least 15 mph above the speed limit to elude arrest, resisting arrest, running a stop sign and unlawful use of a conveyance. Williams also was arrested on an old warrant and charged with strong arm robbery. He was placed in the Vance County jail in lieu of 95,000 bond. Officers from the Henderson Police Department, Vance County and Warren County Sheriff's de partments, Norlina Police Department and the State Highway Patrol participated in the chase. WILLIAM T.
