Burning Tank Extinguished Warren County fire men were able to extin guish a burning LP gas tank and tobacco barn near Norlina Monday after dousing the tank with water to cool it off, according to reports by A1 Bennett, deputy chief of the Norlina Volunteer Fire Department. The 11 a. m. fire on the farm of Lewis Richard son on Oine Road took 500 gallons of water per minute for about four minutes before flames were extinguished. The tobacco barn was completely destroyed by fire. The cause of the fire is unknown, but Bennett surmised that tobacco in the bam may have fallen on the gas burner inside. According to Bennett, propane tanks are designed so that a valve on top of the tank opens to allow the fuel to escape if temperatures get too high. 0. L. "Butch" Meek, a member of the Norlina Department, said yesterday that heat from the burning barn caused the valve to ex pand and escaping liquid to burn like a torch. The danger of an explosion, Meek said, diminished as firemen continued to pour water on the tank. The valve shut off when the tank cooled. About 15 firemen fought the fire.
