Moisture May Cause Problems Foggy windows may be annoying, but when there is so much water condensing that it runs down the wall or remains on the windows for weeks at a time, even into the afternoon, there is too much moisture in the house. "If this condition is allowed to continue, mold, mildew and rot problems will arise. Damage done to houses by rot is as great as or greater than that done by termites," says San dra Dellinger, exten sion housing specialist, North Carolina State University. A tightly sealed new home or a tightened up older home is vulner able. The answer isn't to loosen up the house. In stead, decrease the amount of moisture in the air. Here are a couple of ways to do this: - Make sure kitchen, bath and dryer vents blow air to the outside, not the attic or basement. - Install storm win dows and doors. Less water will condense if the inner window glass is warmer. - Insulate ceilings, walls and the crawl space of the house with a vapor barrier to the heated side. - Cover the crawl space with 4 mil polyethelene plastic. - Have any plumbing problems underneath the house corrected. - Correct moisture problems in the basement. - Use a dehumidifier in problem areas, if necessary.
