Mrs. Myrtle Fleming visited her daughter, Mrs. Ruth Gettings in Chester, Va. recently. Mrs. Gettings has returned home from Retreat for the Sick Hospital in Richmond, Va. Mrs. Pat Baker and Mrs. Leola Baker plan to participate in the Friends of the Library Arts and Crafts Show in South Hill, Va. on Saturday and Sunday. Mrs. Selma Rooker spent the weekend in Greensboro with Mr. and Mrs. Jackie Matthews. C. joined them for the celebration as did Mr. and Mrs. Truett Callihan of Winder, Ga. and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Tingle of Richmond, Va. Mr. and Mrs. John Clarke have returned home after spending some time at Emerald Isle. Miss Denise Thaxton of Goldsboro spent several days last week with Mr. and Mrs. B. A. Thaxton. Mr. and Mrs. Bobby Thaxton of Wilson visited the Thaxtons on Tuesday and James Thaxton of Goldsboro visited on Wednesday. Mr. and Mrs. Joe Egerton spent Sunday in Raleigh with Mrs. Betsy Pace. Mr. and Mrs. Jessie Harris of Newport News, Va., spent the weekend with Mr. and Mrs. Thurston Ayscue. Thurston Ayscue, Mrs. Bertha Harris and Mrs. Willa Hester attended the funeral of their brother, James Ayscue, in Raleigh on Thursday. Circle 3 Has Meeting Here Circle Three of Norlina United Methodist Church met in the home of Jeannie Wilson at Drewry with Virginia Knight as hostess on Monday night. Quay Robinson presided. Mary Lib Taylor presented a program entitled "A Collection of Thoughts on United Methodist Women's Projects." The World Thank Offering was received at this time. Christmas projects were discussed and plans were made for Christmas remembrances. Following the benediction, delicious refreshments were served. Of wives employed in 1981, a third held parttime jobs. Senior Citizens Enjoy Halloween By SADIE YANCEY On November 1, the Norlina Senior Citizens Social Club entertained at a Halloween social in honor of Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Harris, recent bride and groom. Mrs. Harris is the former Mrs. Hazel Norwood, president of the club. The party was held in the activity room of Providence United Methodist Church in Afton. The party began with a bean contest, whirh was won by Mrs. Marjorie Harmon. Those attending in costume were judged, and all received gifts for their participation. Mrs. Eleanor Hayes was dressed as Clark Gable and Mrs. Martha Draffin as a stylish lady. Others in costume were Mrs. Dot Duke, Mrs. Pauline Robinson, Miss Sadie Yancey, Mrs. Hazel Harris and Dennis Harris. Group singing was accompanied by Mrs. Bessie Bartholomew on the guitar, Ted Grimes on the banjo and Mrs. Ted Grimes on the tambourine. The group was invited into the dining area, where the table was covered with white lace over a pink cloth. After the group toasted the couple, party dainties were enjoyed by all. Mr. and Mrs. Harris expressed appreciation to everyone who participated in the occasion. Mrs. Newsom One Of 2 New Officers Dorothy Newsom of Norlina was one of two new officers of the United Methodist Women of the Raleigh District installed at an Oct. 25 meeting at Zebulon United Methodist Church. Mrs. Newsom, a member of Norlina Methodist Church, was installed as tri-county president, and Bernice Verzall of Flat Rock Methodist Church, Henderson, was installed as president of the Raleigh district. The installation service was led by Alice Ashton. Featured speaker for the day was Margaret Moore, a missionary to Korea for 40 years. Ms. Moore gave interesting accounts of her varied Lola Sue Group Has Gathering The Lola Sue Mission Action Group of the Norlina Baptist Church met with Mrs. Myrtle Fleming on Monday morning, Oct. 29. Mrs. Nita Fuller, chairman, opened the meeting with a reading from Romans 10. Mrs. Fleming led the opening prayer. Mrs. Jeanette Shearin, Mission Action chairman, suggested that each member take clothing to the November meeting for the Nursing Center closet. Members were also advised that anyone wishing to give items to the family who recently lost their home to fire to please take items to the parsonage and the Rev. Mr. Little would see that the items are delivered. Names were drawn for a love prayer partner. Mrs. Fuller brought to members' attention the World Day of Prayer on Nov. 5 and the Week of Prayer for Foreign Missions beginning Nov. 22. The November meeting will be with Mrs. Bishop and Bertha at the nursing home with Mrs. Lottie Nance furnishing the refreshments. Mrs. W. A. Mustian, program chairman, gave the program, "The life Style of Caring." Mrs. Shearin closed the meeting with a solo. experiences including her work in drama and music in the university and her work with prisoners. She told the group that Koreans were vibrant Christians and 30 percent of all Koreans are Christian. Also, Sister Theresa Floyd spoke on her work with prisoners in North Carolina. An interesting skit, "Mirror, Mirror on the Wall," written and directed by Mildred , Dillon, was presented. It portrayed eight women who were leaders in early Methodism, among whom were Suzanna Wesley, Fanny J. Crosby, Semantha Smith, Madam Chiang Kai-Shek and others. Edna Hair, Raleigh treasurer, conducted a Pledge Service using the scripture passage, "Cast your bread upon the waters." She urged the group to think about the scripture in making their pledges to missions. District gifts to missions were made in the names of Anne Collins, retiring district president; Carrie Goodwin, retiring tricounty president; and Rosa Fleming, chairman of Christian Global Concerns. THOUGHT FOR FOOD brQOULDCROOK Chewy Cheddar Cut-Ups Preheat oven to 375V Grease 13" x 10" pan. In large mixer bowl, cream: 1 cup margarine. Add and blend well: 2 cups grated cheddar cheese Add and mix well: 2 cups sifted flour. Divide mixture in half, press each into balls and chill. Combine and cook over low heat, stirring constantly, until mixture thickens: 2 cups cut-up dates 1 cup finely-chopped pealed apple W cup Sugar Twin V* cup water Set aside to cool. Meanwhile, pat out one portion of dough to cover bottom of pan. Spread filling (evenly over dough. Roll out other portion of dough to 1/8" thickness. Cut into Vi inch wide strips. Crisscross strips on top of fifag. Bake for 25-30 minutes. Cool on wire rack. Cut into 1 Vi inch squares. Yield: 60 squares. Two Warren County women received honor* at the recent annual meeting of the 14th District of the North Carolina Federation of Women's Clubs in Roanoke Rapids. Mrs. Lillian B. Kilian (left), president of the Noriina Woman's Club, won the Creative Writing award and Mrs. L. 0. (Ree) Robertson won an award for Best Work in Civic Affairs. The occasion marked the second time that the ladies had received their respective awards. (Staff Photo) Clubwomen Receive Two Awards At Annual Meet The annual meeting of the Fourteenth District of the North Carolina Federation of Women's Clubs was held in the First Baptist Church, Roanoke Rapids, recently with Roanoke Rapids Woman's Club, Roanoke Rapids Civic League and Roanoke Rapids Junior Woman's Club serving as hostesses. Those attending from Norlina Woman's club were Mrs. L. 0. Robertson, Mrs. Margaret Ann Brame, Mrs. Pattie Brauer, Mrs. L. C. Dabis and Mrs. Lillian B.Kilian. Miss Priscilla Davis, president of the Fourteenth District, presided and led the group in singing the Club Woman's Hymn and Dr. W. C. Campbell invoked the Lord's blessing on the work of the assembly. Mrs. J. W. (Betty) Weathers, Jr. of Youngsville, president of the North Carolina Federation of Women's Clubs, and Mrs. Terry Hill, of Greensboro, third vice president, were keynoters of the day. These speakers encouraged each one to increase her efforts in volunteer work of General Federation, using her time to the greatest advantage. Each club president gave an account of her club's accomplishments during the past year, with some ladies being quite dramatic in their reports. The climax of Uie annual meeting came at the end of a delicious luncheon when the district awards were presented by Mrs. Margaret Ann Brame, awards chairperson. Norlina received two awards. One was presented to Mrs. L. 0. (Ree) Robertson for Best Work in Civic Affairs for giving of her time, talents, interest and active service to her community. The other award was given for "Creative Writing" for a Founder's Day Celebration Program, including skits and a song, researched, written and directed by Mrs. Lillian B. Kiiian, president of Norlina Woman's Club. (These two ladies received the identical District Awards two years ago at the annual meeting of District 14 in Franklinton). To the members assembled, Miss Priscilla Davis stressed the importance of their attending future meetings and festivals of the federation. She then led in repeating the Collect of Club Women, thus adjourning the annual meeting of 1984. Harrington Gets Bank Promotion Scott M. Harrington, son of Mr. and Mrs. Merle Harrington of China Grove, was recently appointed to senior vice president and senior trust officer of First National Bank of Jefferson Paish, in New Orleans, La. Harrington is the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. T. J. Harrington of Henderson and Mrs. John W. Mayfield, formerly of Norlina. Prior to the appointment, he served as the trust marketing director at Hibernia National Bank in New Orleans. He has also been a trust officer with N. C. National Bank in Raleigh. Harrington received a bachelor's degree in history from HampdenSydney College and a master's degree from Western Carolina University. HARRINGTON Bad Vibrations Billy: "I see you got yourself a car."
