Members of the newly formed Warren County Chapter of the North Carolina Social Services Association ( NCSSA) recently attended the spring North Central District Meeting. (Staff Photo by Howard Jones) Newly Formed Warren Chapter Host To District Association The newly formed Warren County Chapter of the North Carolina Social Services Associa tion (NCSSA) was host to the spring North Central District Meeting on March 25. The North Central District includes the counties of Alamance, Caswell, Durham, Edgecombe, Franklin, Granville, Nash, Orange, Person, Vance and Warren. The meeting was attended by approximately 100 guests at the Lakeland Arts Center in Lit tleton. Local president, Stella Rideout, and Warren County Director of Social Services, Henry Hayes, welcomed those at tending. Patricia Hill, district president of Durham County, presided over the business meeting and introduced Larry Johnson, state NCSSA president and director of Social Services in Transylvania County. Johnson updated the members on a recent study commission initiated to improve and simplify procedures used in providing services through social services agencies. The study also con sidered job classifications and reclassification. Committee reports were given, including legislative, scholarship, employee relations and nominat ing. An award to the Employee of the Year was presented to Ver non Brown of Vance County. Cer tificates were presented to the other candidates who were nomi nated for this award. Patsy Dunn, chairman of the nominat ing committee, announced the candidates for state and district offices for the 1988-89 year and campaign speeches were given by candidates attending. After a catered buffet lunch, the Super Eagles of the Warren County High School chorus, directed by Howard Stultz, enter tained guests with a varied selec tion of songs. Committee reports were continued after the enter tainment. Dana Courtney, state legisla tive committee chairperson of Durham County, gave an update on recent legislative activity and NCSSA involvement. Pat Hill concluded the meeting with farewells and expressions of appreciation for everyone's sup port and encouraged continued support to Mary Lou Flowers, president-elect of Edgecombe County and former employee of the Department of Social Serv ices in Warren County. Door prizes were presented by Mary Smiley, Elizabeth Harris, Robin Williams and other Warren County members. Names for door prizes were drawn from the basket by Vernon Brown. Ten-Mile Fund-Raising Bike Trek Is Scheduled When the clock strikes 10 on the morning of Saturday, April 16, Warren County residents with in terest in supporting the research of the Leukemia Society of America, Inc. will gather at the Warrenton Baptist Church on Main Street, mount their bikes and speed off on a 10-mile trek to raise funds. "I can't think of a better way to spend a Saturday morning," said Dr. James Holt, chairman of the Warren County Bike-A-Thon and veteran biker. "We had 13 riders last year, who braved the elements in the name of leukemia research, and I am hopeful we will have an even larger turnout this year." Funds raised last year in Warren County exceeded $600. The Warren County Bike-A Thon is a part of a statewide ef fort to raise funds for leukemia research. Funds are raised by direct contributions or through by-the-mile pledges made by sponsors of the participating bikers. Leukemia is a malignant dis order of the blood-forming tissues. Without treatment, 90 percent of acute leukemia vic tims would die within a year. According to Dr. Holt, the route followed in the Bike-A-Thon will be identical to that used last year. Bikers will leave Warrenton Bap tist Church on a course up N. Main Street before turning left at the Warren County Schools bus garage en route to the Norlina Public Library, a distance of five miles. "From there, we will simply turn around and trace our route back to the Warrenton Bap tist Church," Dr. Holt said. "We've checked the route and know that the ride is 10 miles in length." Persons who wish to support the Warren County Leukemia Bike-A-Thon, either by con tributing or by riding, should con tact Dr. Holt (257-3141, business hours; 257-1106 evenings) or Mrs. Betsy Gardner (257-3318, busi ness hours; 2S7-4307, evenings). In the event of inclimate weather, a decision to postpone the Bike-A-Thon until Satuniay, April 23, will be made on the day of the event, Dr. Holt said. THOUGHT FOR FOOD Or GOULD CROOK Meat Loaf With Cheese Meat loaf: 1 '/) lbs. lean ground beef 'A cup Finely chopped onion I cup quick cooking rolled oats '' 1 cup (4 oz.) shredded sharp Cheddar cheese I tsp. each: salt, Dijon-style prepared mustard '/? tsp. pepper 1 cup milk ? egg, lightly beaten Glaze: 'A cup catsup ? I tbsp. brown sugar Yi tsp. Dijon-style prepared mustard Preheat oven to 3 JOT. Combine meat, onion, oats, cheese, salt, mustard and pepper. Stir in milk and egg. Pack mixture into lightly but tered 9x5-inch loaf pan. Bake 1 hour. Remove from oven. For glaze, com bine all ingredients. Spread over top of meat loaf. Return to oven and bake 10 minutes longer. Six servings. Area Deaths And Funerals MRS. MILDRED ALSTON Funeral services (or Mrs. Mildred Alston, 90, of Henderson were held Thursday, March 31, at 4 p.m. at Spring Street Baptist Church by the Rev. R. M. Bum ette, assisted by the Rev. Wesley Crews and the Rev. Evelyn Crouch. Burial was in Elmwood Cemetery in Henderson. Mrs. Alston was the daughter of the late Lewis and Mrs. Addie Young Alston. The Vance Coun ty native was a member of the Church of Christ and was em ployed for several years at J. P. Taylor Co. She died Sunday, March 27, at Maria Parham Hospital in Henderson. Survivors include one daugh ter, Miss Betty L. Alston of the home; one son, the Rev. William Alston of Henderson; two sisters, Mrs. Mable A. Harrison of Nor lina and Mrs. Gladys Yancey of New York, N.Y.; two brothers, Dr. Johnny Alston of Durham and James Alston of East Orange, N.J. ; and three grand children. Arrangements were by Terry's Funeral Service of Henderson. ALMA E. PLUMMER Funeral services for Mrs. Alma Edwards Plummer, 64, of Philadelphia, Pa. were held on Monday, April 4 at 11 a.m. at Russell Union R.Z.U.A. Church by the Rev. A. A. Brown and the pastor, the Rev. H. C. Wright. Burial was in the Burchette Chapel United Church of Christ Cemetery. Mrs. Plummer, daughter of Mrs. Sarah B. Edwards and the late John R. Edwards, Jr., was born in Warren County on De cember 13, 1923. She graduated from Warren County Training School in Wise and did further study at Winston-Salem Teachers College. She died on March 29 at Jeffer son Park Hospital in Philadel phia, Pa. Survivors include her husband, Clarence Plummer; two daugh ters, Mrs. Sandra Copeland and Mrs. Robin Thomas; four sons, Clarence E. Plummer, Tony Plummer and Terry Plummer, all of Philadelphia, Pa. and Kim Plummer of Monterey, Calif.; two sisters, Mrs. Carol E. Burwell of Manson and Mrs. Mary E. Kearney of Warrenton; four brothers, Thomas E. Ed wards of Manson, John R. Ed wards, III and Joseph N. Ed wards, both of Bronx, N.Y. and Willard W. Edwards of Jamaica, N.Y.; and four grandsons. Arrangements were by Harris Turner Funeral Home, Inc. of Warrenton. MRS. PAUUNE M. KNOTT Graveside services for Mrs. Pauline Meedor Knott, 83, formerly of W. Main Street in Washington, were held at 11 a.m. Friday, April 1, at Oakdale Cemetery by the Rev. Andrew K. Meedor. A native of Ridge way, Poplar Mount, Mrs. Knott was the daughter of the late John and Matilda Holtzmann Meedor. She was a retired teacher in the Pitt County school system, having taught in Farmville. Mrs. Knott was a member of First United Methodist Church. She died Wednesday, March 30, at Beaufort County Hospital. Survivors include three sons, Lee E. Knott, Jr. of Washington, Dr. Rufus H. Knott, II of Green ville and Eddit Knott of New Bern; and three grandsons. At the family's request, memorial contributions may be made to the donor's favorite charity. ODELL RUSSELL Funeral services for Odell Russell, 50, of Manson, will be held on Wednesday, April 6 (to day) at 2 p.m. at Burchette Chapel United Church of Christ in Manson by the Rev. R. D. Bullock, Jr. and the pastor, the Rev. Charlie Leath. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Mr. Russell was born on Oc tober 7, 1937 in Vance County to the late William Henry Russell and Jessie D. Russell. He died on Saturday, April 2 at Duke Medical Center in Durham following a short time of declin ing health. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Lucille Hargrove Russell of Manson; eight daughters, Angela D. Russell and Juanita Barnes, both of New York, Clementine Russell and Tracey Russell, both of Manson, Patricia Russell, Alfredia Russell, Brenda Russell and Carolyn Russell, all of Henderson; five sons, Wallace Russell, Stephon Russell, Chris topher Russell and Otis Russell, all of Henderson, and Jerome Russell of Germany; two sisters, Mrs. Novella Terry and Mrs. Emma Watkins, both of Manson; one brother, Henry Russell, Jr. of Manson; and four grandchildren ? VIOLA TOWNES Funeral services for Mrs. Viola Townes, 77, of Rt. 3, Henderson, will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednes day, April 6 (today) at St. John's Baptist Church by the Rev. A. A. Brown. Burial will be in Mid dleburg Cemetery. A Franklin County native, Mrs. Russell was born on March 23, 1911 to the late Lucious and Henrietta Branch. She was a member of St. John's Baptist Church in Middleburg where she was a Sunday School teacher, a member of the Missionary Circle and Adult Choir, and director of the Youth Choir. ? ? She died on Friday, April 1 at her home in Middleburg.
