Around Warrenton Jeff Palmer has returned home after visiting his children and grandchildren in Oakton, Va. Mr. and Mrs. Tom Watson visited Mrs. Herbert Jones of Salisbury for several days last week. They were joined in Salisbury by Mrs. A1 Blase of Greensboro. Mr. and Mrs. Ronnie Robert son and son, of Raleigh, spent the weekend with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. L. O. Robertson, Jr., and took part in the Member/ Guest Golf Tournament. Mr. and Mrs. Joe Clayton and Amanda Shearin, of Raleigh, visited Mr. and Mrs. A. A. Wood last weekend. Mr. Clayton played in the Member/Guest Golf Tour nament at the Warrenton Golf Club. Mr. and Mrs. Lance Dillard had Mr. and Mrs. Frank Renn and Candice, of Cary, as weekend guests. Mr. Renn was a guest at the Member/Guest Golf Tour nament. Mr. and Mrs. David Gardner have returned from a cruise on the "Mardi Gras." They visited Nassau and Freeport in the Bahamas, where they attended the Southern Home Furniture Association's Convention. He serves as a director on the board of the association. Miss Karen Harris recently returned from a mission trip with the UNC Baptist Student Union to Freeport, Bahamas. Bill Davis, Ward, Josh, and two school friends, Bear Mitchell and Mark Davis, all cf Raleigh, spent the weekend with Mrs. W. S. Davis. Mrs. Elizabeth Daniel, of Lit tleton, visited her sister, Miss Mary Frances Rodwell on Sun day. Also visiting was Mrs. G. H. Jordan of Cary. Mrs J. N. Linker, Reid and Stephen, of Charlotte, visited her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Daniel, for several days recently. Mr. and Mrs. Tom Banzet and family, of Stoneville, visited his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Banzet, over the weekend. Boyd Fleming, Jr., of Henderson, visited Mr. and Mrs. Don Loposay, Kim, Karen, Jarrod and Natalie in Raleigh Friday. They attended Natalie's kinder garten graduation exercises at Friendship Baptist Church. Visitors and dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. V. R. Vaughan Sun day were: Mr. and Mrs. Scott Barber of Roanoke Rapids; Mrs. Helen Vann, of Jackson; Mr. and Mrs. Robert Vann of Richmond, Va.; Mr. and Mrs. Gary Vaughan of Gillburg; Mr. and Mrs. Terry Vaughan and son, Justin, of Wilson; and Mrs. Annette Bur rows and son, Chad. Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Rooker visited Mr. and Mrs. Ricky Boyette and Crystal in Durham Sunday. They attended a dance recital in which Crystal par ticipated on Sunday afternoon. Aaron Allen is a patient in Duke Medical Center, where he is convalescing in room 7306 North. Greg Allen, of Lexington, S.C., visited his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Aaron Allen, for a couple of days last week. Marty Allen, of Shelby, visited his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Aaron Allen, recently. Mrs. Hattie Scott is a patient in Maria Parham Hospital. Eddie Clayton has returned home, following surgery at Duke Medical Center. Weekend visitors of Mr. and Mrs. Allen Tucker were their grandchildren, Laura and Vee Vee Edwards, of Raleigh. Mr. and Mrs. B. W. MeAuslan, of Medford, N.J., were in War renton for a few days recently. Mr. and Mrs. Glen Benton, of Charlotte, visited Selby Benton last weekend and attended the Member/Guest Golf Tourna ment at the Warrenton Golf Club. Proper Pressure Needed In Canning By EMILY BALLINGER Home Economics Agent Agricultural Extension Service Do you own a pressure canner with a clock-type gauge? If so, have you had the unit tested for accuracy? Proper pressure for canning is most important for safe pres ervation of food, and pressure canner gauges should always be checked each year. The canner gauges can be checked for accuracy at the home economics extension agent's of fice in the Warren County Agri culture Building, which is located at 101 South Main Street in Warrenton. There is no charge for testing canners. Just bring the lid and the procedure will take only a few minutes. If new parts are needed, recommendations will be made. Now is the time to get your can ner tested. Also, remember that when can ning low-acid vegetables, the food should be processed in the pressure canner. Ms. Rodwell won second place in the Semi Professional/Professional division with her watercolor "Autumn Emanation;" and first and third places for her mixed medias entitled "Incessant Trace," shown, and "Summer Serenity." respectively. Mrs. King won first place in the amateur division for her mixed media entitled "Strawberry Time," which was sold dur ing the show. First place winners won a silver Revere bowl en graved with the show name and date and are invited to have 30-day solo exhibits of their works at Henderson-area banks and/or the hospital during the next year. Also winning a first-place prize in the amateur division was Brenda Y. Keeter of Norlina, for her oil pain ting "Rob's Stable." (Staff Photo by Howard Jones) Warrenton Musician Cited In Magazine A Warrenton musician has been cited in the June issue of a national publication. Ms. Thurletta M. Brown, choir director and organist for Em manuel Episcopal and All Saint's Episcopal churches, was cited in "The American Organist," the monthly journal of the American Guild of Organists, on the pre mier performance of her anthem, "At Christmastide." The com position, written for organ, two trumpets and choir, was per formed last Christmas Eve at Emmanuel Episcopal Church here. The anthem was also per formed last Christmas morning at Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church. Ms. Brown was also cited for an earlier anthem, "Go With f? God," which was written on the occasion of the departure from the Warren County Episcopal community of Fr. Henry Presler, who had accepted a call in Monroe. After its premier per formance in January of 1988, "Go With God" was sung last spring by the WCHS Eagle Chorus dur ing commencement exercises. The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thurston T. Brown of Warrenton, Ms. Brown is news editor for this paper and also serves as man ager for Brown's Funeral Ser vice, Inc. Warren's Jobless Rate Still Below 5 Percent Although Warren County's un employment rate has risen a full percentage point. Warren is still among the 73 North Carolina counties with April rates at or below five percent, a report released recently by the state Employment Security Commis sion (ESC) has shown. For April, Warren County's un employment rate was 4.6 per cent. The rate for April had in creased a full percentage point from that reported for March? 3.9 percent. The unemployment rate reported for April of the previous year in Warren County was 3.8 percent. The county with the highest unemployment rate for April was Graham, with 16.3 percent. The lowest rate was reported for Currituck, with 1.8 percent.
