nmuon i A up. ar« arc l due to r aoti ids of boll 1 ell as I were s are year, kragp. lifting in the usage of coni -1 mPrcial fertilizer on cotton this year has in many localities resulted in re_ , bdueed prospects for yield. However, the general weather conditions prior , to August Ist were such that the plants were enabled to get the maxi • mum benefit. The stands were far 'from perfect, averaging about 20 per jcent below normal. However, this sit j uation is rather uniformly distributed over the cotton counties, instead of the | usual good stand in some fields and poor in others. The spotted stand w hich | was in evidence the early part of the | season is not. so noticeable now, with the more mature plants, j It is interesting to note that the ! prospective yield of 255 pounds of lint lon August Ist of this year in North Carolina has only been exceeded ten ! times as shown by past records. How. ever, due to the reduction ,in acreage, the expected production of 713,000 ,bales is the smallest crop this State, has produced since 1917. The yield per acre is 35 pounds more than was expected on August Ist last year and 30 pounds more than was actually l harvested last year. While it is quite possible that this prospect may be materially reduced before the end of the season, the Aug-1 ust prospects have usually been fairly close to the final ginnings. Last year the government’s August Ist forecast 9-10 of 1 per cent above the final gin_ nings. Pennsylvania woman regained lost speech after being stung by a i bee. In stead of sitting neai the edge of his orchard, gazing in the direction of the city, cursing the capitalists, he’s mov ing among his trees, looking ’em over, appraising them according to their promise. lopping off a cross-branch here, cutting shrubs or a coniferous tree or two. Or he can probably be found down below the pasture consid ering a dam so’s to have a little lake of his own. That’s the way he does. He’ll sup port a beautiful apple in his hand, without plucking it from the branch, and gaze at it for five minutes. His horses neigh at him; his cattle bawl at him; his hogs squeal at him; the birds sing for him; the breezes blow for him; his dogs and kids follow him around. Yep, that’s a farmer. And there ain’t a dang thing the matter with him.
