Miss Nettie Moody is visiting friends in Bunn. Misses Rosa and. Lizzie Taylor of near Wilson visited Miss Christine Taylor, Sunday. Miss Rachel Cone and W. B. Cone were Raleigh visitors Thursday. Miss Ollie Wester of Maplevile visited in this section Tuesday. Miss Florine Hayman and Roy Vaughan of Rocky Mount visited Mr. ! and Mrs. J. F. Perry Tuesday night. The tobacco prospects in this sec tion are indeed poor. After a care ful survey I find that there is not more than 35 per cent of last year s crop planted. The greater part of the crop is young tobacco and is suffer ing greatly from the prolonged drought. Tobacco is drying up at the bottom at a very rapid rate and is be ing eaten at the top by an enormous quntity of worms. The average crop of tobacco has little or no body what ever. However, the older tobacco has become quite thick and rough. This makes it almost impossible to cure the tobacco together with any success. Yet, it has to be cured together on account of the short crop. The aver age farmer does not have enough to bacco to run one barn. In many cases three or four cure in the same barn. Under present conditions it is very doubtful if this section produces more than 25 per cent of last year’s crop. Bethany News There was a large crowd at prayer meeting last Wednesday night. Mrs. N. H. McCullers spent last week in Durham with her sister, Mrs. Oens. „ Miss Jewel Williford of Ang.er spent last Sunday with Helen Wat- S °Mrs R A Weathers and children i of Gary and Mrs. G. L. Mr. and Mrs, Herman Moore and 1 family of Clayton spent Saturday with Mr. and Mrs. J‘. R. Moore. Mr. J. H Moore of Newport News. Va, is spending some time with his brother, Mr J. R. Moore. Mrs. J. R. Moore is improving af ter several weeks of sickness. Mr. and Mrs. Belvie Cox and little daughter, Belvie Cathrene and Vir ginia Cox of Petersburg, Va., are spending a few days with Mr. G. H. Cox. Mr. Johnnie Williford of Angier spent last Sunday at the home of Freddie Williford. The tobacco of this community is diseasing very badly. To begin with I most of it was set in June and only j about one-half of a crop. Now when we should be finishing housing, we , are just beginning. j It’s surprising how many things a ; girl can learn at a boarding-school.' that will never be any use to her. J It may take nine tailors to make a man, but one Christmas is easily! enough to break him if he is the hap-1 \ py father of nine children. t 5 “ASK DAD, HE KNOWS The following letter from “Your j Affectionate Father" to his “Dear I Daughter,” published in the Rock_ , land (Me.) Courier Gazette has such la sympathetic and timely ring that Iwe share it w ith our readers: “Yt.u u>'. .;e if your husband should stay on his present position at an adjusted salary, but forget to tell I me w r hat he would do if he didn’t. You and ho couldn’t very well come i here just now. Your brother Sheri dan’s salary has just been reconsid ered, so he moved into his old room at home, and brought his wife. “Your sister Eloise telegraphed the next day that Wilfred has just been offered a new' contract that w r as an insult, so your mother is airing out her room. Wilfred never could en dure insults. Your sister, Frances, who you will recall has been a pri vate secretary, wrote last week that if anybody thinks she is going to drop to the level of a common typist they are mistaken, so we expect her any day. “What with those and the younger children, I imagine that as long as Rupert’s salary is merely being ad justed he had better stay. It’s hard for me to keep up u'ith the new lang uage of big business, but as I under, stand it, an ‘adjustment’ is the equiv alent of a raise. Os course, Rupert wouldn’t know that; he has been working only since 1928; he should ask some old timer to explain what a raise is. “My own business is coming along fine. It was sold on the courthouse steps last Friday, hut there were no bidders, so the sheriff let me keep it. That makes the best month T’vc had since the upturn Exchange. Love sometimes sneaks out at the window without waiting for poverty to come in at the door.
