Tuesday, May 24, 1955 Tar Heel Parents Urged to Practice Safety with Kids “Practice safety with your chil dren.” That was the advice given Tar Heel parents this week by Joe W. Garrett, assistant motor vehicles commissioner. Garrett pointed out that nowa days parents are urged to take an active interest in the children’s games and lessons, to practice their dancing with them, to join them in other activities. “So why not practice safety with them, too?” he asked. He proposed that parents make safe practices a habit in the home and more particulaily in traffic. It is not always necessary to tell the child to look both ways before crossing the street, he said. The parent who obviously looks both ways is setting an example the child cannot fail to observe. “Children look up to their par ents,” he said, “and they take as much pride in imitating the care ful parent as they do in imitating the daring and careless one.” Garrett also urged parents not to fear indulging in old-fashioned discipline if such action is neces sary. “Your firmness may someday save your child’s life,” he told par ents. Garrett listed five practices for parents to put into effect with their children. 1. Practice and talk safety at home and in traffic until safety becomes second nature with the child. 2. Absolutely forbid playing in places. Where safe play places for children do not exist, parents should exert individual and civic pressure to have safe play areas provided. 3. Support the school and the police in their efforts to promote child safety. 4. Be firm even though it may be painful to do so. The easy going parent may someday be re sponsible for an accident to the child. 5. Never permit children to use roller skates, coaster wagons or bicycles without supervision until they have demonstrated their abil ity to use such articles carefully and safely. Perfect Squelch Frank Kemp’s job in the Lions Club for the past year has been that of what the Lions call “tail twisting,” which consists of brow beating members out of spare Change at meetings, fining them for failing to wear their Lions pins and in general keeping them alert to their duties as responsi ble members. On election evening Frank’s name was on the ballot for pres ident, and after dinner he remain ed in his seat and someone asked him if he was going to do any tail twisting and he smiled and shook his head. “Do you think I’m crazy?” he asked. While the nominating commit tee was counting the ballots M. L. Hagwood, Frank’s opponent, told members that Frank had promised to give the club a big feed if he won, and someone asked Frank what M. L. had promised. “He promised to pay for it,” he said. Patronize the advertisers of The Zebulon Record.
