The amendment will allow a six-weeks period for the renewal of registrations, running from January 1 to February 15. Radio hams can secure special license plates under the provi sions of another amendment. An FCC licensed amateur radio opera tor next year can get his call let ters on a special plate similar in size and design to the regular tag. It costs a dollar extra in addition to his regular registration fee. Same thing, more or less, for owners of old timey autos. “Horse less carriages” more than 35 years old may be adorned with distinc tive plates which will cost the owner only $5.00. And farmers, hear this. Tractors now must have one white light showing forward and one red light to the rear. Both lamps clearly visible for at least 500 feet. This amendment replaces one requiring tractor to have one white light to the front and rear. Slow pokes on the highways are handled with an amendment that reads “No person shall operate a motor vehicle on the highway at such a slow speed as to impede the normal and reasonable movement of traffic except when reduced speed is necessary for safe opera tion because of mechanical failure, or in compliance with law.” The Zebulon Record Oar (Great America •& tyWoodyjjfr ’fth" 0 ' ■ A- mml HoW FAST CAtJ A _ MAM TRAVEL ? Some penned by the great of literature . . . and some by just me. • Oscar Wilder said: “A cigarette is the perfect type of a perfect pleasure. It is exquisite, and it leaves one unsatisfied. What more could one want?” • Remember when a lot of sum mer canning was done around the furnace inside the tobacco barn? Rows of jars of tomatoes, corn, soup mixtures, and other vegeta bles were readied in this manner for the pantry shelves. Many times, too, apples were dried in side the barns on suspended chick en wire. • Thomas R. Marshall opined tb it “What this country needs is a good five-cent cigar.” Wonder didn’t he ever think that a good five-cent box of snuff would be just as welcome to many of us as an evil-smelling cheroot? • Ever noticed how many farm women resort to wearing gloves during tobacco barning season? They eventually wish to hide their stained hands and unsightly nails, but they forget about the open toed, open-heeled shoes they wear, showing their heels full of cracks ingrained with greenish tobacco stain and dirt. • The cookies of Isaac Hawkins Browne’s heart were warmed by tobacco so much so that he penned an ode to the weed. It goes: “Lit tle tune of mighty pow’r, Charmer of the idle hour, Object of my warm desire.” • Have you noticed, too, that preachers’ sermons denouncing the evils of tobacco have just about faded away. Wonder why? • At almost every social gather ing there is a refreshment hour. This custom of serving has now invaded tobacco barning. At mid morning and mid-afternoon a round many of the barning scaf folds you will find the workers casually enjoying a Pepsi and a pack of nabs or a cookie-type cake. • Somebody asked if there would possibly be any tobacco in Heaven. He got an answer that there might be, but it would be only for the beauty of its leaf and bloom. “Yes, and fools” said the ques tioner, “will begin cropping the leaves and turning them into cig arettes, snuff, and chewing tobac co, and begin peddling it to the friends who enjoyed it so much here on earth.” • I close with Kipling’ quote of “A woman is only a woman, but a good cigar is a smoke.” Join the National Guard and earn while you learn.
