THE ZEBULON RECORD
Volume XXX. Number 11.
Thanks Is Expressed
By Committee Heads
To the People of Zebulon and
Community:
The Committee for “The World
Comes To Zebulon” wishes to
thank all the people of this com
munity for the overwhelming suc
cess of last weekend. Our fondest
hopes and most cherished dreams
were far surpassed by the event
itself. You showed that Zebu
lon is a friendly town, not only in
name, but in actual fact. Seldom
is such love, warmth, and genuine
friendliness shown, and it was ex
ternally moving to witness both
the quality and quantity of it in
these past few days.
The community adventure in in
ternational understanding brought
us a deep feeling of kinship with
people throughout the world. Our
talk about “One World” became
a living experience. This was
made possible only by the enthusi
astic participation of so many peo
ple who thoroughly exemplified
Christian love and who clearly re
vealed the “American way of life.”
We wish to thank every family
who took a student as its guest
and who furnished meals for the
students. Moreover, we wish to
thank all the various committees
and organizations for the special
role that they played. They are as

Zebulon Record —Publicity
We could go on and on express
ing our thanks. Many people de
serve our thanks. We simply can
not name them all. This goes to
show that we had a community
project this last weekend as well
as one world.
It is our belief that the visit
ing International Students learn
ed much from the Zebulon com
munity. It is our knowledge that
we learned much from them about
their lands and peoples. It is our
hope that this was the beginning
of new and lasting international
friendships, and we are deeply
grateful to learn that many of the
students have already been invited
to return.
Thank you very much for mak
ing this a successful weekend. In
deed, we thank you all the more
for the grand spirit you mani

OBSERVATIONS Otj 'WORLD COMES TO ZEBULON'
Potter Patter
The world has come to Zebulon
and gone; but a spirit of interna
tional fellowship will continue to
influence the lives of all concern
ed. Overcoming langauge and cul
tural differences to discover basic
similarities is indeed a thrilling
experience, one which is bound
to change forever our attitude to
ward those who call some other
land home.

Unfortunately —for us, that is
—Jack and I were unable to have
one of the international students
in our home. However, we en
joyed talking with some of our
friends’ guests so much that we
are wondering if we can arrange
to have a student from abroad vis
it us privately. Also we are won
dering if it would be possible to

World Comes to Zebulon Project
Proves to Be Outstanding Event
Wilbur Debnam, Mayor of the
Town of Zebulon, reported that he
considered the “World Comes to
Zebulon” campaign a very great
success. He is very pleased to re
port that the outcome of the pro
ject was well above expectations.
He said that there will be a
meeting of the committee that
worked with this project at an
early date to evaluate this pro
gram. After the evaluation, any
findings of this committee will be
sent to the University to help aid
any other communities that at
tempt a similar project.
Mayor Debnam spoke warmly
of the committees that worked on
this project, the townspeople that
cooperated so beautifully, and all
that participated in this event.
“I have talked with 10 or 12
people and they seem to feel that
it was a very great success,” May
or Debnam said. “These people al
so said that they are anxious to
have these students visit their
homes again.”

there is no better way to build in

welcoming people from other
countries as guests in our town and
in our homes.

The past weekend produced a
wealth of ancedotes which will be
remembered and repeated for
years, each time recalling the
warmth of friendship and good
will which provailed. Just for
the record, here are a few little
stories which struck me as being
particularly interesting or humor
ous.

The young man from Japan who
stayed with Barrie and Judy Davis
presented them a work of art from
his native land. Seeking to under
stand the scene, they asked what
Weekend Highlights
Mrs. Lucille Pippin, local florist
said, “It’s the nicest thing that
Zebulon has done in a long time.
To those that didn’t have one of
these foreign ambassadors of good
will, let me say that they really
missed something fine and good. I
wish that everybody could have
enjoyed such an occasion.”
“I couldn’t have asked for any
better cooperation from the hosts
and hostesses,” said Mrs. Christine
Hopkins, one of the committee
in charge of securing homes for
the visiting students. “Many peo
ple have told me how much they
enjoyed this type of thing, and
really hated to see them leave. I
believe they made a great and last
ing impression on their hosts and
hostesses, in fact on all the sur
rounding community. I believe it
was also the best plug for Foreign
Missions that we could ever have.”

Mrs. Elizabeth Horton was tell
ing that when she went into the
room where the guest she had
slept, she discovered this note to
the Horton family. It read: “This
is the way I feel. I am very grate
ful to you, to all members of the
Horton family, for being so kind
ly with me, and I can tell you that
I will ever remember you, as well
as all you people of Zebulon. In
this short time I have learned to
love you and this is the way I feel.
Thank you, thank you very much.”
Mrs. Horton reported that when
she read this note that tears well
ed up in her eyes. “He was the
nicest and sweetest young man
imaginable. We want to have him
back some weekend before long,”
she said.
•
“I sincerely hope that Zebulon
make that “World Comes to Zeb
ulon” a yearly event,” Mrs. Edna
Allman said when asked her re
action to the affair. “It was a very
fine thing, and I hated to see my
little Peruvian guest go.”
Mrs. Allman said that her visitor
had a great fondness for fried
chicken.

My partner for one number at

States only two months, I think
he danced to our music and com

Students and Hosts
Enjoy Weekend
Full of Activity
Forty-one students from 17
countries spent the past weekend
in homes of the Zebulon commun
ity as “The World Came to Zebu
lon.” They learned first-hand of
the life in a small American town
and gave their hosts an opportun
ity to know and appreciate people
from other parts of the world.
From the time the students ar
rived from Chapel Hill Friday af
ternoon at 5 o’clock, until they
returned Sunday afternoon, there
was scarcely a moment left free
for the guests.
The 30 host-homes received
their guests at 5:15, giving the
students time to become acquaint
ed before the joint meeting of the
Lions and Rotary Clubs in the
Wakelon cafeteria.
Thad Eure, North Carolina’s
Secretary of State, told the visi
tors that Zebulon was the ideal
place for such a project to be
staged, because the town is located
close to Raleigh and is in the sec
tion where American liberty was
born.
Mr. Eure cited both the United
States Constitution and the North
Carolina Constitution as good ex
amples.
The purposes of community or
ganizations were explained in
short talks. Frank Kemp spoke
on the Lions Club; Ferd Davis on
The Rotary Club; Thomas Monk,
Chamber of Commerce; Franklin
Jones, Wakelon School; and Mrs.
Exum Chamblee, Junior and Sen
ior Woman’s Club.
Following the meeting, a dance
was held in the Wakelon gymnasi
