News of Wendell Mrs. Rachel Johnson of Raleigh visited Mrs. Margaret Todd Satur day. Mr. and Mrs. Bobby Coley of Raleigh spent the weekend with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Coley. Mrs. Elbert Holmes of Farmville spent the weekend with her moth er, Mrs. M. C. Todd, who accom panied her home for a visit. Mrs. G. W. Miller of Raleigh is visiting her sisters, Mrs. S. T. Dodd and Mrs. H. F. Tunnell. Mrs. Lorna Hocutt Barnes is a patient at Wendell-Zebulon Hos pital with glandular fever. Her four children are with Mrs. Barnes’ parents, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Hocutt. Mrs. Milton Strickland is a pa tient at Mary Elizabeth Hospital with a blood clot of the brain. Mrs. Paul Wrenn, sister-in-law of Mrs. Lee Mattox, is a patient at Rex Hospital. She was taken ill while on a visit with the Mattoxes. Mrs. Betty Blackman of Fayette ville is visiting relatives in Wen dell. Mr. and Mrs. A. R. Ledford and Mr. and Mrs. Laurie C. Ledford attended an ordination service at the Marion Baptist Church at 3 o’clock Sunday at Chatham, Va., for Leslie Giles. Mr. and Mrs. Giles have lived in the Laurie C. Ledford apartment for the past year. Mrs. Giles is the 7th grade teacher in the Wendell School and Mr. Giles will return to the Semi nary at Wake Forest for his senior year. Robert Hester of Richmond, Va. is spending the summer in Wendell. Miss Joan Hester is spending this week in Salemburg where she will teach again this year. She has been recuperating from a wreck in the early spring. Sam Hagley of Belmont is vaca tioning with his grandfather, Isaac Kannon, and other relatives in Wendell. Miss Marian Carlton of Char lotte returned home Saturday after a two week’s visit with relatives. Mr. and Mrs. Roscoe Nowell spent the weekend at Carolina Beach. Their son George spent the week with friends and returned home with his parents. Miss Katherine Kannon and Miss Rose Marie Hagley of Belmont are in New York City on a buying trip for Kannon’s Ladies Shop. Mrs. Charles Rogers and aunt, Mrs. Marjorie Taylor of Lillington, vacationed recently in Western N. C. Mrs. Lewis Knuckley and Mrs. Jimmie Batten were in Charlotte three days last week on a buying trip. Lewis A. Todd, government tobacco grader left last Tuesday for the Valdosta, Ga., market. Mrs. J. J. Henderson, Jr., Julia and Jay, Mrs. H. P. Long and Pam Coley vacationed last weekend in Western, N. C. Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Phillips of Hookerton were weekend guests of Mr. and Mrs. C. L. Wheeler. Mr. and Mrs. John Linso and daughter Sarah of Shelby were visitors this week of Mr. and Mrs. A. O. Brideers. Supt. of Wake County Schools Fred Smith and Mrs. Smith of Zeb ulon attended open house Sunday for the new school principal, Ron ald D. Berry and Mrs. Berry, at the Wendell Woman’s Club. Miss Nane Phipps spent last weekend at New London, Va., near Virginia Beach as a guest of Miss Peggy Payne. Mrs. J. H. Sanders and daugh ter Emmy, Miss Maggie Dean and Miss Lizzie Lee Dean visited their sister and brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Percy L. Carlton, in Charlotte last week. The Clarence Roberts have been on the Lake City, Fla., tobacco market. Mrs. Roberts returned by plane last Sunday and resumed her work at Monk-Henderson. Mrs. H. R. Roberts spent part of last week in Wilson with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Bishop. Mr. Roberts is on the Georgia market. H. P. Rhodes returned last Fri day from Duke Hospital where he has been a patient for two weeks. Claude Winebrener is improving at his home after suffering a black out at his home last Thursday. Mrs. O. Griswold spent the weekend in Rich Square with her daughter, Mrs. Robert Outland, and helped celebrate he” birthday. Steve Street of Garner is visiting his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. S. S. Creech. Guests at Atlantic Beach last weekend were Mrs. Garland God win, Mrs. Mary Alice Phillips, Joy Nowell, Mary Todd Satterfield, Jay Godwin and Debbie Phillips, all of Wendell. Robert Dean is on the Swains boro, Ga., tobacco market with Monk-Henderson Tobacco Co. • Mrs. Will Stott was hostess to her bridge club and guests at her home on Buffaloe Street Tuesday at 3 p.m. Guests were Miss Ida Mae Cheatham of Halifax, Mrs. Arthur Williams and Mrs. Jack Vernam of New Jersey, Mrs. Lee Mattox and Mrs. Harry Gerald. Club members were Mrs. Jake May, Mrs. Audrey Baynes, Mrs. J. B. Bilisoly, Mrs. J. T. Clay, Mrs. Vernon Powers, Mrs. Clarence Todd, and Mrs. W. H. Griffin. High scorer for guests was Mrs. Williams, high for club was Mrs. Clarence Todd, second high, Mrs. W. H. Griffin and low went to Mrs. Vernon Powers. Fruit punch was served during progressions and a congealed salad plate with iced tea was served dur ing the social hour. Mrs. Stott remembered all her guests with a gift from Mexico, where she and Mr. Stott vacation ed recently. The 5th Sunday Union Service of all Wendell churches was held July 30 in the Christian Church. The Rev. Roy McCormick, Pres byterian minister, read the Scrip ture, worship in prayer, Fev. W. H. Vinson, Baptist minister. The Rev. Allen Wentz, Methodist min ister, delivered the sermon. The Christian ChuTch choir sang an anthem with Carl Hull as soloist. Mrs. M. C. Todd was at the organ. The Rev. J. D. Whidden, minister of the Christian Church, presided during the service. Following the service a fellow ship hour was held in the Fellow ship Hall for refreshments. The Rev. Allen Wentz and Mrs. Wentz and son and daughter who have recently come to our community as the pastor of Wendell Methodist Church were recognized. • Honoring debutante Garwood Monk, Mrs. W. A. Britt and Mrs. Leo T. Britt entertained at a party Wednesday morning at the home of Mrs. W. A. Britt in Wendell. Guests included two Raleigh debu tantes, Misses Tillie Witmer and Penny Ives. Also debutantes, Misses Kitty Peacock, Lewellyn Fike, Rosalind Pittman, Mary Woodard, Ann Simons and Jean Harris of Wilscn and Bailey deb utante Lynda Strickland. The Britt home was decorated in roses and snapdragons in shades of pink and red. Miss Monk was presented a pink rose corsage and a gift of jewelry. Guests from Wendell included Mrs. R. H. McCormick, Mrs. D. T. Bailey, Mrs. Curtis Todd, Mrs. J. J. Henderson, Jr., Mrs. Harley Hopkins, Mrs. W. W. White, Mrs. G. E. Vaughan, Mrs. J. W. Richard son, Mrs. J. H. Sanders, Mrs. J. Harold Griffin, Mrs. G. Cole, Mrs. H. W. Underhill, Mrs. J. C. Perkins and Misses Sandra Scar borough and Joy Nowell. Mrs. H. W. Underhill was host ess to her bridge club at her home last Friday night. Members play ing were Mrs. J. H. Sanders, Mrs. Charles Rogers, Mrs. Paul Todd, Mrs. John Alford, Mrs. Joe Rich ardson, Mrs. Curtis Todd, Mrs. George Vaughn and Mrs. Harley Hopkins. Mrs. Hopkins was presented high score prize and Mrs. Todd, second high. Homemade peach ice cream and pound cake were served during the social hour. • Wendell Resident’s Sister Passes Mrs. Christine Beaman Darden, 64, of Stantonsburg, a former teacher, died Monday. She was graduated from Wom an’s College and had taught school in Ahoskie, Wendell, Fairmont and Stantonsburg. She was a member of Taberna cle Methodist Church in Greene County. Surviving are two sisters, Mrs. L. H. Scarboro of Wendell and Mrs. C. G. Day of North Wilkes boro; one brother, Derwood Bea man of Durham. Funeral services were held Tuesday at 3 p.m. in the home, conducted by the Rev. E. M. Thompson, Jr., pastor of Stantons burg Methodist Church, and the Rev. J. R. Craig, pastor of Tab ernacle Methodist Church. Burial was in Stantonsburg cemetery. • Births Mr. and Mrs. R. W. Mitchell, Jr., announce the birth of a daughter July 24 at Rex Hosiptal. Mrs. Mit chell is the former Emily Adams. Mr. and Mrs. Bobby Buffaloe, Camden, S. C., announce the birth of a daughter, Anne Dale, July 23 in Camden. Mrs. Buffaloe is the former Patsy Anne Yancy of Wendell. Mr. and Mrs. Victor M. Pace announce the birth of a son July 30 at Rex Hospital. Mrs. Papers the former Elizabeth Richar ¥1. Mr. and Mrs. Willard Hinnant announce the birth of a daughter July 31 at Rex Hospital. • Mrs. G. M. Todd was hostess to the Faithful Workers S. S. Class of Hephzibah Church at her home on Marshburn Avenue Monday night. Mrs. Harvey Hocutt was program leader. Refreshments of cookies, potato chips and iced drinks were served to the mem bers. Recent Bride Given Miscellaneous Shower A bride of July 9, Mrs. Don Driver, was entertained July 28 with a miscellaneous shower. Hostesses were Mrs. Bobby Driver, Mrs. Harvey Hopkins and Mrs. Forrest Pearce. A green and white color scheme was used in the Hopkins Chapel Church Fellowship Room where the social was held. The refresh ment table was covered with a white linen cloth and held the cry stal punch bowl on one end and a crystal candelabra filled with mixed summer flowers on the oth er end. Mrs. Carl Bunn, mother of the bride, presided at the punch bowl. Other refreshments were bridal cakes, mints and nuts.
