THE ZEBULON RECORD VOLUME 37. NUMBER 40. ZEBULON. N. C.. NOVEMBER 8. 1962 Bulldogs Are Conference Champs STARS . . . Freddie Ellington, left, and Randy Creech, Wakelon Bulldogs, are two reasons why the team took the conference championship. Lioness President Actress, Antique Lover Mrs. G. R. Massey, Jr. Her house is her hobby, Bobbie Lou (Mrs. George R., Jr.) Massey admits with pride. And the min ute you walk into it, you have that same feeling. The house, warm and comfort able, is full of the things which reveal Mrs. Massey’s personality. Bric-a-brac, china or porcelain figurines, antiques. Things which she has collected and bought;! things which are beautiful and tastefully displayed. “I love anything early Ameri can,” Mrs. Massey said, her dark blue eyes luminous. “Early American furniture and objects just fascinate me. You can see, though, my den is full of them." Mrs. Massey, president of the Lioness Club since May when she succeeded Mrs. M. L. Hagwood, loves to keep house and prides hcr iclf in doing her own decorating. “Next to my home and husband and son Jtigy III, who is seven, I guess I love people,” she gestured with the manner of an actress. “I love to observe people, seeing their different facial reactions to certain situations, the way they move their hands and arms, and of course, the way they talk.” There is a touch of the actress in Mrs. Massey. She was the lead ing lady in the senior class play at Cary. The symphonic drama, “Atahualpa, The Last of the In cas,” was written by members of the senior class. Bobbie Lou Cole, who she was then, was selected to play the royal prin.'ess of the Incas. Incidentally, Mrs. Massey re called a fellow classmate who wrote the original musical score (Continued on Page 5) Local Resident's Grandson Gets Scout God and Country Award The grandson of a Zebulon resi dent, Mrs. Bessie Gay, has been awarded the God and Country Award. Dennis Griffin Bill Quick The Wakelon Bulldogs were crowned champs of the Wake Nash-Edgecombe class A league last Friday night as the Zebulon gridmen defeated defending cham pion Spring Hope 27-12. The Bulldogs drew first blood and scored in every period to com pletely dominate play. Led by their explosive backfield, the first TD came on a one-yard plunge by fullback Freddie Ellington that climaxed a 78-yard drive. Creech accounted for the extra point and a 7-0 lead. Spring Hope struck back fierce ly as halfback Charlie Quick drove over from the four. The PAT at tempt by Edwards was no good. Wakelon came roaring back and on a nine-yard pass from QB Tom my Wood to HB Thurston Debnam, moved into the lead as Wood pass ed to Creech for the extra point and a 14-6 advantage. But the Raiders scored in the final minutes of the first half as HB Ronnie Pace rammed over from the elev en. The attempted run for the ex tra point was smothered and the halftime lead of 14-12 was in favor of the underdog Wakelon eleven. The Bulldogs exploded for a quick-opening play early in the third, when on the second play from scrimmage, Debnam scam pered for 57 yards to give Wakelon a 20-12 advantage. Wood passed to Creech for the extra point that moved the score to 21-12. Early in the fourth quarter, quarterback Tommy Wood inter cepted a Spring Hope pass on the Wakelon two and returned it back out to his own forty-two. Wood’s interception was seen by the coaches as the turning point in the game. After an exchange of punts HB Debnam intercepted a Spring Hope pass on the 20 and ran back to the 8. Four plays later, Creech scored from one out and the final score read 27-12. Wakelon has scored a total of 213 points in nine games and held their opponents to 118 points. Their 5 3-1 record is the poorest in three years but the 3-0-1 conference record gave them the crown. Previously Wakelon had scored a 7-0 victory over Benvenue, 40-7 victory over Wendell and tied Nashville 14-14. They suffered one touchdown losses to Oxford Orphanage and Louisburg, the latter defeat coming in the final second of the game. Their third loss was a 39-20 defeat at the hands of Carolina Military Acad emy of Maxton. Other victories were over Four Oaks 39-6, Bethel Hill 39-0. Next week the Bulldogs meet Ohas. B. Aycock. Coached by Maurice Chapman of West Virgin ia, the co-captains of the team are senior backs Wood and Ellington. Zreech and Debnam are sopho mores.
