LENOIR. N. C. LENOIR NEWS-TOPIC. APRIL 28, 1921 P&ge Seven THE THERMAL BELTS (Charlotte Observer) The destruction of fruit in the western counties by the recent freeze will serve to bring into prominence the almost forgotten circumstance of the existence of thermal belts in the mountain sections of North Carolina.' The most extended and the best known of these belts is in Polk coun ty, but there is a termal belt of con siderable area in Wilkes, also. It is formed by the protecting walls of the Brushy mountains and covers a considerabV part of the Happy Val ley. It is in this belt that the Gold Medal orchards are located, and it is interesting to know that the man agers of this orchard have made ex amination of the trees and report that they escaped damage, and will this year bear a full crop. It is of record that none of the orchards in this belt has ever been known to lose a crop of apples by frost or freeze. It is this same, circumstance that has made the Polk county belt famous. The areas of these belts are so pro tected that a visitation by frost is an unknown occurrence, and so it hap pens that while the uplands and un protected orchard areas throughout the western part of the State have suffered considerable losses by rea son of the cold snap of Sunday and Monday, the fruit in these belts is un harmed. Maj. H. C. Landon, secre tary of the Wilkes Commercial Club, in making report to the Observer of the safety of the Gold Medal or chards, indicates belief that the same is true of all other orchard interests that are within the actual thermal belt of the Brushies. The immunity of these protected areas in the North Carolina moun tains from damage by cold weather will be unquestionably emphasized by the recent destruction wrought elsewhere. It is a good advertise ment, albeit at the expense of the fruit growers outside these belts. These thermal belts constitute an other North Carolina asset our peo ple ought to know more about, out, like a good many other fine things the State has, they are destined to secure first and the larger share of appreciation from the outside, WOULD REPEAL PROHIBITION ENFORCEMENT ACT Repeal Of the Volstead prohibition enforcement act is proposed in a bill introduced in the House by Repre sentative Hill, Republican, of Mary land. The effect of repeal, Mr. Hill said in a statement, would be to leave the enforcement of the eighteenth amendment to the concurrent power of the states. Mr. Hill declared he was for "real law enforcement," but not for "farcical evasion." 6RH1A USED 51 TEA TO DARKEII Hi She mixed Sulphur with it to Restore Color, Gloss, Youthf ulness. The American men and women ranst guard constantly against Kidney trouble, because we eat too much and all our food is rich. Our blood is filled with nri add which the kidneys strive to filter nut, they weaken from overwork, become sluggish ; the eliminative tissues olog and Che result is kidney trouble, bladder weakness and a general decline in health. When your kidneys feel like lumps of lead; your back hurts or ths urine is cloudy, full of "sediment or you are obliged to seek relief two or three times during the night; if you suffer with sick headache or dizzy, nervous spells, acid stomach, or you hare rheumatism when the weather is bad, get from your phar macist about four ounces of J ad Salts; take a tabtespoonful in a glass of water before breakfast for a few days and your kidneys will then act fine. This famous salts is made from the acid of grapes and lemon juice, combined with lithia, and has been' used for generations to flush and stimulate elogged kidneys to neutralize the acids in the urine so it no longer is a source of irritation, thus ending bladder disorders. v Jad Baits is inexpensive; cannot in- furs, makes a delightful effervescent ithia-water beverage, and belongs is every home, because nobody can mak a mistake by having good kidnej flush ing any time. DR. SPEAS' INFIRMARY FOR EYE, EAR, NOSE -' AND THROAT,-x Over Hickory Drag Ca. v ' Hkkory, N. C. THE COST OF ELECTRICITY ON THE FARM (The A. B. C. of Electricity for the Farm) Electric light and power on the farm are very cheap. The average farm home uses only five cents' or ten cents' worth of electricity in a day. One cent's worth of electricity will do any one of these things: Light a large reading lamp for 5 hours. Light an ordinary fixture in the kitchen, bathroom or bedroom for 8 hours. Light an electric lamp in the barn for 10 hours. Pump 225 gallons of water. Run a 9-inch fan for 5 hours. Run a washing machine for 40 minutes. Heat an electric iron for 2 hours. Run a milking machine for one quarter hour. Run a churn for 1 hour. Run a separator for 1 hour. Run a grindstone for 1 hour. Run a fanning mil! for 1 hour. Run a corn sheller for 1 hour. Run a vacuum sweeper for 1 hour. Electric light and power for the farm are not only cheap, but ac tually save time and money. On many farms where-fdwtrie liwhr anJ power are used the following amounts of time and money are saved each weeK: Cleaning and trimming lamps, 3 hours. Operating cream separator, 1 hour. Operating washing machine, 3 hrs. Operating grindstone, ft hour. Pumping water, 5 hours. Operating fanning mill, hour. using eiectnc iron, l hour. Total time saved, 14 hours. An hour of labor on the farm is worth at least 40 cents. So the 14 hours saved by electric light and power are worth 14 times 40, or $5.60 per week. This means a sav ing of $291.20 per ye r. An electric vacuum sweeper saves some time, too, by making the sweep ing a quicker and easier job. This saving might be added to the time given above. COLD MINING (Charlotte Observer) Representatives of the mineral di vision of the Southern Tariff Asso ciation have expressed a determina tion to enlist the assistance of Con gress in "opening the abandoned mines of the South." The proposed endeavor is a worthy one. The cities and towns in the piedmont section of North Carolina are built above and the railroads and highways run over a mass of gold-bearing veins of known assays and which are capable of producing enough gold to pay off the national debt and keep the gov ernment running indefinitely if mined in practical manner. If it's gold the government wants piedmont North Carolina soil is the place to dig in to get it. Announces Important Changes in fasaenger Tram Schedule, Effect ive 12:01 A. M., Sunday, April 24.
