- ftge Ten OUR LETTER BOX , RUFUS Yes, of course we wanted to finish the cultivation of our corn, finish harvesting the wheat straw, cut the oats we are needing for feed, break a few acres and sow some peas and soja beans, plant some corn for late rost'n ears, work out the garden, and do a few other odd jobs before the wetting rain, bur it caught us up just this way last Sunday evening-, and now the ground is jood and wet. Mrs. Lucy Laxton is visiting her people on Mulberry. Those who went out Sunday morn ing for a pleasant day's ride no doubt found their chains very useful or. their return. The worms have bene driven down at last by the hot sun, and the corn they left looks more hopeful. We have many desires, but few ex pectations. The folks were all gone from home one Sunday recently, ard a few came and caught the biggest chicken he could rind, and left a little note where it could be seen which read like this: "Dear Mr. : I got one chicken and if hit aint the right un I'll bring him back and git an othern." As he got only one the owner never tried to track him up. Mr. John Hayes of Lenoir is visit ing at Mrs. Carroll Tolbert's. Mr. Horace Tolbert motored to Bridgewater Sunday and took quite a large crowd of young folks to see the big dam. Mr. Tom Roberts' two brothers and their families visited him last Sunday. Mr. John Phillips and family are visiting in the Globe. Mr. J. V. Gragg and family are visiting at Rufus. Mr. Henry Johnson and family are visiting at Edgemont this week. Mr. Julius Grisett's mother re turned to her home at Valdese Sun day after spending a week here. Mr. Fred Gretne motored to Bridgewater Sunday, taking with him a crowd of young folks. Mrs. Mamie Raby and son, Carl, hav egone to visit Mrs. Haby's moth er, who is very sick. KING'S CREEK A good rain yesterday refreshed the crops. We are planning a ten days' sing ing later in the summer. Mr. Sam Ernest of Virginia is vis iting here. Misses Annie and Kate Laxton vis ited Miss Mattie Livingston Safurday night and Sunday. Miss Vada Laxton left for Blowing Rock a few days ago, where she has a position for the summer. Mrs. T. J. Livton v'-ited her daughter, Mrs. Hill Laxton, at Le noir. Mrs. Alva Birlow, win fe!! and broke her hip, is improv nr. GRANDIN Daniel Shuford died at the age of 10 years. His death took nl nee on June 6 and he was 'buried at Mariah's chapel June 8. There was a large congregation present. Rev. E. D. Ballard of North Wilkesboro had charge of the funeral. He was assist ed by Rev. E. E. Yates of Moravian Falls and Rev. H. A. Dobbin of the Patterson School. In the death of Daniel Shuford great sorrow cairne to his parents and brothers and sisters, and they have the sympathy of all tne gooa people oi the community. Little Dan was a faithful Sunday school scholar at Mariah's chapel. His teacher was Mrs. Steele Frasier. There was a large crowd at prayer meeting last Sunday night, and we all hope it will continue that way, for we all enjoy going to prayer meeting. Miss Alma McCali visited Miss Vanda King last Monday. Greer Glenn, a graduate of the school and now a student at the Uni versity, was welcomed by his friends here the past week. When we see Supt. Edmonson of Avery with us we always feel like saying "Come again." He was here the past Thursday seeing after his teachers. Several visitors were here the past week, among them Mr. Meek of Ten nessee, representign an educational journal; Mr. George Blair of Blowing Rock and others looking after insur ance interests. Mr. L. C. Brogdon of the State building committee spent last Friday and Saturday at the Training School and public school look'ng after the interests of his work.
