A big force of bands lias been at work
on West Depot Street today and fine
progress has been made with the widen
ing work . As soon as the excavation
work is completed a concrete base will
be laid on the new part of the street.
The McClellan 5-10-25 Cent Store will
open its new quarters in tlie Fetzer
building on Saturday of this week. The
building has been entirely changed siuee
vacated by the Parks-Be'.k Company,
and is ready for the McClellan stock of
goods.
Only two persons were tried in re
corder's court yesterday. They were
charged on the same warrant with au
affray and were fined $lO each. The
other case docketed for trial yesterday
and charging abandonment, was con
tinued at the request of the defendant.
R. 1). Goodman, County Farm Agent,
will go to Statesville tomorrow afternoon
to make a study of grain and fertiliser
tests conducted at the Tredell County
Test Farm. All agents in this district
have been invited to the. test farm to
watch the demonstrations, which will
be conducted by experts who have made
the demonstrations.
Dr. J. Mt Grier, who came to Con
cord Tuesday night to conduct tlie* fun
eral of W. Lee Watson yesterday, re
turned yesterday afternoon to his home
in Newton. I>r. Grier this week is
moving into the manse of the First
Presbyterian Church of Newlou. and for
that reason he was unable to stay longer
with friends here.
Dr. 8. E. Buchanan, county health
officer, is this week expecting a dentist
to report in this city to complete the
school dental clinic started several weeks
ago. Dr. 11. B. Foster, who started
the clinic, resigned several weeks ago
ami since that time Dr. Buchanan has
been unable to get a dentist here to
complete the work.
A Story Telling Hour for children
will be observed at the library on Satur
day afternoon at 3 o’clock, Mrs. Rich
mond Reed, the librarian, stated this
morning. It has not yet been decided
who will conduct the hour this week,
but some one who lias had experience
in this work will be qn hand to enter
tain the children.
Mr. Reuben Utley has given up his
work as carrier boy for The Tribune
and is now employed in the mechanical
department of the TimCe-Tribune office.
Reuben carried papers for eight years
and proved one of the best carriers the
paper ever had. His younger brother.
Jim Utley, has been carrying papers
ever since he was old enough to hold a
job under the State Child Labor I-aw.
The first of the commencement exer
cises for the city schools will be held
this evening. The exercises this even
ing will be given by the students of the
graduating classes of Central School and
No. 2 School and will be held in the au
ditoriums of the two schools. Plays
will be presented by eaeli class, and the
entire programs will be of interest. The
general public is invited.
“Sow about the half holiday for the
business houses of the city this year?"
This is a question one hears very fre
quently here now. For several years
all business houses observed a half holi
day each Thursday during the summer
months, but the custom did not prevail
last year and as nothing has been said
about it this year, it is practically cer
tain that no half holidays will be ob
served this year.
Major W. A. Foil, tax commissioner
for this county, stated this morning that
the tax books would be open in Cabarrus*
county uutil June 9th. “We were just
a little late in getting the books open,”
Major Foil stated, “and for that reason
they will be kept open until Juny 9th
and persons can make their returns any
time until that date.” It was original
ly planned to close the books today, the
last day of May.
Bake Ruth, king of swat, is slowly
but surely climbing to the head of the
list of home-run hitters. The Babe
started off slowly, but so far he has
