Thursday, June 21, 1923. SOCIAL AND PERSONAL D. A. B. Meeting. The Cabarrus Black Boys' Chapter D. I A. It. held the last meeting of the year on Wednesday afternoon Mvith Mrs. R. E. Bidenhour as hostess. Sixteen mem bers were present, with two visitors. Rev. W. H. Eubanks, of Poplar Tent, ami Mrs. .T. F. Shinn, of Norwood. One new mem ber was elected", Miss Myrtle Harris, for merly of Concord, but now of Pharlofte. T..e principal business of the after noon was the election of a new Regent to succeed Mrs. John F. Reed, who has been the Regent for the past two and a half years. Mrs. R. S. Young was the fortunate choice of the chapter, and it is to be congratulated upon having her as Regent. She was a charter member of the organization, has represented it in the Washington Cougress. and is equipiied by position and nbility to take the, leader ship of this work. Rev. W. H. Eubanks, who has assist ed the Chapter in having re-published Harris' History of Poplar Tent, made a few remarks about this work. The Reg ent. on behalf of the Chapter, presented Ms. Eubanks with a purse, in apprecia tion-of the work and help he has given in having this history re-published. Tite feature of the program for the afternoon was a report given by Mrs. .1. F. Shinn, of Norwood, on the last Con v tinental Congress, which met in Washing ton. Mrs. Shinn's description was de < lightful. She touched the high-lights of - the Congress with n humor that this meeting of tile 1). A. R.'s often evokes, rfnd closed with a description of Belleau Woods, reproduced in the Smithsonian Institute. The sacrifice of our boys there was made [sensible by the high ideals for which our country stands and for wHieh we trust she will always stand. After Mrs. Shinn's talk the program was fittingly closed by the -Chapter repenting the Americau Creed. ✓ Mrs. Rideuhour, assisted by Mrs. H. (J. . Gibson and little daughter, Frances Gib son. Served a delicious ice course, after Which the meeting adjourned until Fall. Visitors Honored. Miss Cornelia Stribling. of Atlanta, and Miss Mary Hewit Moore, of Gaston ia. who are the attractive guests of Miss es Elizabeth and Annie Gttffy Day vault, are being the recipients of many social courtesies. Tuesday Miss Mary Day vault gave a lovely dinner party in their honor., Tuesday evening Miss Elizabeth Dnyvault gave a beautiful party in com pliment to iter guests. Th."' home, yard and flower garden were very lovely on this occasion. Early summer flowers were used in profusion. After several hours spent in dancing, and in other en joyment. tlie hostess served a delicious ice course. About thirty or more guests were iuvited. Wednesday eveuiug. Miss Edith Gttffy gave a charming party in honor of Miss es Stribling and Moore, and Miss Susie Crowell, of Thomnsville. who is the guest of Miss Gttffy. Miss J'rowell has visited here on several occasions, and she is pleasantly remembered in Con cord. After a delightful social hour, the guests were served tempting refresh ments. Party Tuesday Evening. Miss Elizabeth Day vault charmingly entertained Tuesday evening, honoring her attractive house guest, Miss Mary Hewitt Moore, of Gastonia. The lovely reception hall, living room, and porch were made more alluring by the summer flowers, which were used in profusion. Tlie beautiful front lawn and the rose' garden were quite popular with the thir ty or more guests during the eveuiug. Duucing was enjoyed by a number of couples, after which delicious cream and cake were served by Misses Dayvault. Mr. John F. Kern, Jr., of Salisbury, spent several hours here Tuesday with friends. A wedding of much interest and sur prise to friends in Cabarrus and else where took place at Alt. Olivet Church at sunrise this morning, The two daugh ters of Air. and Airs. John A. Scott were married: I,urn to Air William S. Welborn. and Blanche to Mr. Thomas 11. Hough. Just before the bridal party entered Miss Ida Mate Green, of Roaring River, gowned in brown canton crepe with cor sage of snapdragons, sweetly sang “O Promise Me." accompanied by Aliss Vitus Leo Nicholson, of Burlington, X. C., wearing a midnight blue coat suit with black aceensjories, also wearing a corsage of snap-dragons. As the first strains of I/ohengriu's Wedding March were pealed forth from the stately organ into the early rooming breeze, a bride and groom entered each door, and tobk their [daces at the altar. | Rev. Mrs. 1 Welborn- used bisque accessories, while Mrs. Hough wore blue and blade acees soriqp. Immediately after the ceremony the couples left by auto for short trips. Mr. and Mrs. Welborn expect to spend some time in Western North Carolina, while Mr. and Mrs. Hough will spend their honeymoon in southern cities before- go iug to Lpmpkin, Ga., tor their future I home. June 20.—-Fifty masked men made an unsuccessful attempt at lynching n negro here early Tuesday "when they rode into town and demanded that Sheriff Roberson deliver to them Earl Bascomb. charged with Un attack an a whfte girl and with cruelly beating a white youth who went to her rescue ! yesterday. News of the coming of the ! mob readied the sheriff before they came. | "The negro has been taken away,” the 1 sheriff told them, "but if he were here I would not turn him over to you kluek ers." "We are not kluckers. but we want that negro," said the leader. The sheriff invited them into the jail to see for themselves that the negro was not there.
