THE CONCORD DAILY TRIBUNE NEW YORK WANTS JAZZ RELIGION Paster of Park Avenue Church Re signs With Caustic Comments New York. June 7.—A hig city's demand for "religion with a jazz i tempo" is responsible for the resigna- I tion of Rev. Tertius Van Dyke as pastor of the Park Avenue Presby terian Church to preach in tile First Congregational Church at Washing ton. Conn. Mr. Van Dyke gave his explanation today of his acceptance of the coun try pastorate. “T’lie people of New York want religion with n jazz tempo," he said. “They have driven some preachers to shooting off fireworks and wearing red vests. A great deal of the preach ing in New York is idiotically sensa tional' and the clergy is trying too hard to get attention above the hub bub. “If I were to announce some Sun day morning I was going to do a flying trapeze act the chureh would be crowded. Circus stuff does not make congregations religious and I do not think 1 am the right man to hold a job in the city." In Washington Mr. Van Dyke will preneli in an ancient, white spired church, typical of New England, and a sharp contract with the miniature Gothic cathedral he now occupies. He will remain at his present post until August Ist and take over the new pastorate September Ist. Referring to tile denomination he said that this was "nothing unusual as historically the Presbyterians and Congregntion alists have interchanged preachers.” Dr. Henry Van Dyke, father of the Rev. Tertius Van Dyke, and widely known preacher, poet, author and! diplomat, expressed satisfaction with his son’s change.
