Caldwell, of Monroe, formerly of Concord, will be interested to know that their son. G. B. Jr., has been engaged as football coach for the Charlotte high school. He will begin his work in Charlotte in file fall. Weather permitting, moving pic tures will be shown on the lawn of the Y. M. C. A. Friday night. Babe Ruth continued his terrific hitting by knocking out his twentieth and twenty-first home runs of the year against Detroit Tuesday. The fender and running board of a Buick driven by James Taylor 603 South Meyers Street, Charlotte, were badly damaged Tuesday afternoon at 5 o’clock when it collided with a Buick driven by W. B. Walker at the intersection of Buffalo and Churcli streets. No one was hurt in thf collision. The Gibson Mill baseball team lias two hard games on its schedule foi tli is week. Is the Question. Winston-Salem. June B.—Severn! angles to the automobile wreck tha; occurred near Yadkinville early Sun day morning in which Miss Doi.i Cheek, of this city, lost her life, still remain shrouded in ntystery with little possibility of being cleared up any time soon. The manner in which Miss Cheek was brought back to this city follow ing the wreck is unfathomable. F. C. Lineberry. of Elkin, who picked up Tom Ballard. William Parish and Miss Hub.v Wrenn. stated that these three were the only ones he saw at the scene of the tragedy. He stated last night that he asked how the wreck occurred and one of the men said that the car in which they were rid ing was forced off the road on a bank by a passing auto. He also declared that the car kept moving and tin* driver did not offer any assistance. Mr. Lineberry said lie did not know which of the men made the above statement* The main mystery of the accident is the manner in which Carl Cooper and Miss Cheek returned to the city following the tragedy. No one cquld say what method Cooper used in get ting Miss Cheek back. Mr. Lineb|rr> said he saw only three isrsons at the wreck. Miss Wrenn, Bullard and rar rish. Albemarle, June 8-—Garl Sweat, whose trial for the murder of “Dad” Watkins line! been .staged for Wed nesday. came into the courtroom Tuesday morning and through his at : tm-ney. G. D. R. Reynolds, pleaded guilty of murder in the second de gree. His plea was recorded by the state and he was sentenced by the court to serve not less than 20 years nor more than 25 ill the state peni tentiary. Theodore Gray and Mack renee were given a nol press with leave. The whole proceeding con sumed only about 30 minutes. Tues day morning Carl Sweat will be sent to the state prison the latter part of l this week. John Gray, brother of Theodore Gray, is now under death sentence for his part in the murder of Wat kins, having been tried at a previous term of court. The first American player to win the British amateur golf champion ship was Walter J. Travis, of the Garden Gity Golf Club, who captur ed the title in 1!M)4. Travis at the time was 42 years old.
