A. pool is being repainted on the ex terior, and some improvements are be ing made at the "Y" pool at the pres ent. Fred X. Bell, of the AVestingliouse plant, at Philadelphia. Pa., will ar rive in Concord Saturday to visit Mr. and Mrs. W. 1,. Bell, at their home . on West Depot Street. Eight cases were on the docket for Recorder's Court this afternoon before Judge A. B. Palmer. The cases were on minor charges, the majority of them being violations of the prohibi tion laws. Hobart Upjohn, of New York City, architect for the new First l'resby- , terian Church, was in Concord yes terday inspecting the Church building. Lou (Buster) Gehrig helped the Yankees in their game Thursday, driv- j ing out three home runs. Light showers fell in Concord i -Thursday afternoon but they did little to reduce temperatures which hovered arouud the DO-dcgree mark again. Rain fell twice during the afternoon in Concord and other sections of the county reported light showers. The Gaints won two games in the National League Thursday while St. Louis was winning again. In the American the Yankees and Athletics won and in the South Atlantic Green ville defeated Macon while Asheville was winning from Charlotte. “Below the Line,” is the title of the motion picture which will be shown tonight at the Y. M. C. A. Harry Lee Johnston stated that the picture ' will be Hashed on the screen, begin ning shortly after 8 o'clock, on the “Y” lawn, weather permitting. In the event of rain the picture will be shown in the gymnasium. Mr. and Mrs. Ernest L. Hicks, Dr. and Mrs. Scott Freeze, Dr. Pat Glass and Dr. J. W. Pike, all of this city, returned Thursday afternoon from Greensboro where they attended the three-day convention of the North Car- 1 olina Pharmaceutical Association. Morganton, June 23.—Sffibrtly after 8 o’clock ■ tonight a large crowd of Hickory citizenß arrived here saying o riot call had been sounded in that city with the accompanying informa tion that Broadus Miller, alleged slay er of Gladys Kincaid, had been cap tured and was about to be lynched. - Major Ed. Jones, of the state na tional guard in Asheville, arrived here late today and after conferring with local officers, decided to call troop G, 109th North Carolina cavalry, sta tioned in Hickory. A telephone call was sent to Hickory ordering out the troops as a precautionary measure. Indicatious were given by military officers tonight that both the Morgan ton and Hickory troops would bo held in readiuess throughout the night. No major clues have come to light here since the report that the negro hail been at Hokes store, eight miles southwest of Morganton.
