McGrath told reporters that the President had authoriz.d him to say that “if he is nominated by the Democratic national con vention, he will accept and run." It was a blunt rejection of the growing demands among South ern Democrats in hot revolt against Mr. Truman on racial rights, that he take himself out of the presidential picture. Stephen, extension bee- i keeper from N. C. State College, was here in the county on Tues- | day to examine bees on Ashe county farms and give demon stration at Bower Walters' home. He said that all of the hives showed a definite need for feed ing a pollen supplement at this time of the year. Normally, the colonies start brood rearing in j January and unless they have sufficient pollen for feeding the young bees, they must get it from some source such as, soy bean flour or else they will stop rearing young bees and the hives will be too weak to harvest the honey during the honey flow. By feeding soybean flour and brew sr’s yeast within the hive, the bees are enabled to carry on nor mal brood' rearing regardless of weather conditions. Mr. Stephen demonstrated the mixing of soybean flour and yeast with sugar syrup to make cakes which were placed on the top of the francs in contact with the brood nest. A colony found to be short on honey was fed su gar syrup with the use of an ex tra super and a syrup bucket. It was explained that if there is less than 15 pounds reserve honey in the hive at any time, brood rearing will be slowed down. If anyone has reason to be lieve that their bees have been, or are, exposed to American Foul brood, he can feed sulfa-thiazol in a sugar syrup as a control. Charlie Davis, of West Jefferson, reports excellent results with this treatment last year. Plan To Withofd Knuds I roin Southern States, Is Defeated Washington — A top-heavy vote beat Monday, a proposal to vvithold Federal funds from suites discriminating against NVgroes. But the members averted a record vote on the controversial anti-discrimination amendment, which goes well beyond Presi dent Truman's civil rights pro- I gram. The test was on an amendment to the $1,017,851,000 appropria I tion bill financing the Labor De partment, the Federal Security Agency ana several other agen cies for the fiscal year 1949. The amendment was offered by Representative Marcantonio (AL PNY). It was defeated by a stand ing vote of 119 to 40. Then the House by voice vote passed the bill without change and sent it to the Senate. Some Republicans said before the measure came up that they didn't want to g.1 this far into i the civil tights fight between President Truman, and S uthern ' Democratic leaders. One G. O. P. member said his party was glad to so. the Demo-j crats divided. But if the Repub- 1 1 ieans got behind yesterday's measure, he said, the South might get madder at them than it is at th President. It might, he added, "have the effect of bringing the warring Democrats back together in a united fight against the Repub licans.” The parliamentary situation made it impossible for Marcan tonio to obtain a roll-call vote on his amendment, which was simi lar to one rejected last week by the Appropriations Committee.
