C. j Out of a total of 632 live births in Ashe county in 1947 records of the state board ol health show that 411 occurred in a hospital and 221 occurred out side a hospital or in circum stances unknown. This means that 34.97 per cent of the coun ty’s live births last year occur red without benefit of hospital facilities for mother and child, i The records further show that in 43 counties of the state Iasi 1 year a majority of the live births occurred outside a hospi tal. In the state as a whole the ' percentage born outside a hos 1 pital was 35.17. Among the IOC I counties, Ashe ranked 35th in ' per cent of live births that oc curred without such facilities, i In one county (Hyde) in 1947 the majority of live births did not even have the attendance o1 a physician and in a score ol ; other counties the proportion ol births without such attendance was between one third to nearly one half. A physician was in attendance at 561 of the Ashe births, but 7C had only the attention of a mid wife and one had other or un known attendance, records show I In the same year, the count?; had a total of 21 infant deaths and four maternal deaths. Of the infant deaths, sever occurred in a hospital and 14 outside a hospital or in circum stances unknown. A physician was in attendance at 15 of the 1 deaths and the remaining six had no attention of a physician oi occurred in circumstances un known. Of the maternal deaths, twr took place in a hospital, and two occurred outside a hospital A physician was in attendance nl all" of the deaths. As another aspect of the A hi county health picture, record show that the county budget foi (public health service for the fis cal year 1947-43. total-d $11,941 or .527 per capita. Ot teis total j local sources contributed $5,021 or .222 per capita: the state con j trihuted $3.1139 or .136 per capita and $3.3-33 or .169 per capitr came from the federal govern - ment. Of the 96 counties which spent money for public health service j Ashe county ranked 73th in total per capita expenditures. Another indication of Ashe’s health rating can he found in the fact that from 1940 to January 1, 1945. the county had a total draft rejection of 49.98 per cent according to the Institute for Research in Social Science of the state university. Among the counties Ashe ranked 65th in pel cent of total rejections. In per centage of white rejections the county' ranked 94th, with a rate of 49.86 per cent._ Authors of the stories in the new national magazine are the scientists and information work ! ers at every agricultural college | in the country and with many commercial firms.
