New Regulations Protect Buyers Of Roof Materials Raleigh — After January 1, purchasers of roofing and siding in North Carolina will bo pro tected by a regulation establish ing space coverage, in terms of the “square” and the “square foot,” as the basis of measure ment for such materials. The regulation, adopted No-1 vember 8 by the State Board of Agriculture under authority of the Weights and Measures Law. provides that side laps or joints must be taken into consideration in quoting coverage for siding and roofing. In the case of cor-1 rugated material it specifies that the side lap shall not be less than one full corrugation. Hitherto there has been no’ uniform standard of measure merit for roofing and siding some materials being sold on th( basis of coverage while other; were measured in terms of theii own area with no allowance made for overlapping joints. The new regulation was drawn by C. D. Baucom, superintendeni of the Agriculture Department's Division of Weights and Meas ures. It differs from an earl'or proposal, on which the Board held two public hearings, in tnat it omits a requirement that al roofing sold in this state be marked according to its coverage '•opacity. It also includes siding whereas the original proposal referred only to roofing.
