Warrensville News * Mr. and Mrs. Allan Whitting ton and family were week end guests of Mr. and Mrs. Mac Mc Cormick, Mrs. McCormick is very ill at present. Other guests of Mr. and Mrs. McCormick Sunday were Mr. and Mrs. R. G. Ashley and Mr. and Mrs. Jack McCormick and daughter. Mrs. Chester Race is a patient in the Baptist hospital in Win ston-Salem. Rev. A. C. Ashley is improving following an attack of pneumon ia. Young Geny Shoaf is not too happy this week, being the vic tim of that very unpleasant ma lady, chickenpox. The residence of Mr. and Mrs. Dewey Turnmyer is being re modeled and is presenting a very attractive appearance with its “new look” in size and color. While we are speaking of houses we want to compliment, Mr. and Mrs. Ray James and Mr. and Mrs. Webb Roten on the attrac tive and substantial improve ments in the appearance and con venience of their homes. Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Vannoy of Wyoming, have been visiting friends and relatives near here lor several days. Mr. Vannoy is a former resident of Ashe, mov ing to Wyoming several years ago. Miss Wylene Ashley, of Tar boro and Jack Ashley, student at Emory and Henry college, visited their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Ashley last week end. Mr. and Mrs. Richard Ashley and family and Ted Ashley were week end guests of relatives at Tralee. W. Va. Rev. S. S. Graybeal filled his regular appointment here Sun nay night. His sermon was one in a series having as its theme. -The Church." The well filled church was evidence of the in terest with which these sermons has been received. Mrs. Bess D I .atham and Miss Mamie Smithey, attended the funeral of Herbert Waiters. Sun Mi. and Mrs. Roy Walker and Mrs. J. M. Burkett visited Mrs. Frances Jones at the Ashe Mem orial hospital Sunday. It was with sadness that we learned of the death of Mrs. Sarah Rhodes Sunday afternoon. A For a number of years she had been a shut-in and had been mis sed at church and where ever illness or trouble of any kind came to one of her neighbors, for her loyalty to her church and her kindness to those who were unfortunate, had won her the love and respect of everyone. Most of her more than ninety six years were lived here at Warrensville. She had known suffering and grief, having lost seven children and her husband, but she lived serene, with stre ngth and courage throughout the years, patient, gentle, kind and forgetful of self. Hoffman has announced that1 ECA will ask President Truman for permission to use up its tunds by April 1. Congress provided that the funds should run until June 30, unless tue President found that a taster rate of outlay ; was necessary. Hoffman has said he will pre sent the situation to Mr. Truman! shortly and will ask Congress for about 81,250.000.000 to run the agency from April 1 to the: end of the fiscal year on June 30. Shipments approved for ECA financing after April there fore, carry a conditional clause— dollar help will be provided on ly if Congress appropriates the money. A sharp rise in approved ship ments for Britain contributed heavily to last week’s spending. British grants totaled $330,30.5, 000 and brought the total of Bri tish gifts to date close to the bil lion-dollar mark — $969,137,347. Scottville News Mrs. E. B. Shepherd returned last Tuesday from a trip to Col umbus. Georgia, and Roanoke, Alabama, where she was visi-1 ting relatives. Mrs. Elizabeth Lanier is very sick at this time. Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Perry re cently purchased the Floyd Per ry farm near Scottville. Little Dickie Fawlkes has been sick the past week. Some repair work is being done on Scottville church. Mrs. Oscar Perry has been on the sick list for some time. Last Wednesday afternoon Mrs. H. C. Atwood entertained a number of friends at a stork shower in honor of her daughter in-law, Mrs. Glenn Atwood. Mrs. Atwood was the recipient of many beautiful gifts. Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Woodie have just recently purchased a new car. The Scottville home demon stration club met la«t T.."<-UaV with Mrs. Oscar Woodie. Follow ing the devotional, wmen was conducted by Mrs. Edd Cox, there was a brief business meet ing. The secretary reported that this club had more than raised its quota of $25.00 for the sup port of the Federation meeting next year. There was a round table dis cussion on the trip to the State Fair and on the Achievement Day. A demonstration on roll mak ing was given by Mrs. Woodie. During the social hour the host ess served delicious refresh ments. The December meeting will be with Mrs. E. B. Shepherd, and each member is to bring a gift. Flakes of cellophane are used to provide “snow” on Christmas cards. A survey in one typical large city last year snowed that food took 39 per cent of the budget of wage-earners and lower- sal aried clerical workers compared with 30 per cent in the mid-30 s. W. B.
