Some Of The Scenes From West Jefferson’s Christmas Parade Last Year The Everyday Counselor REV. HERBERT D. SPAUGII, D. I). A smile usually "pays off" well. In Harrisburg, Pa., on No vember 10. smiles paid off in silver dollars. According to the Associated Press, the Harrisburg Optimist Club on that day sent Its members throughout the city with $1,000 worth of certificates tor the best snvk'rs. Naturally, you would expect a club with the name "Oyhnv-o" to do that The word optimist means one who looks for tin best. There were more smilers this year than last year when the Optim ist Club tried the same stunt. "Last year we had to work un til 10 n. in., to get rid of $750," the club president said. " is almost unbel'tvable." declared a bus driver. "I usually have a bus full of sour pusses in the morning, but today I saw nothing but rows of teeth.” All oi this proves that it does't take too much effort to smile. Thousands of people in Harris burg smiled in the hope of re ceiving a dollar as a reward. But smiles produce far greater dividends than a dollar. There’s nothing like a smile to win your way with other people. You simply can’t pick a quarrel 'with a smiling man. He disarms you at the outset. I recall two. recent personal examples. I-was in a traffic jam and al-| most bumped fenders with an other driver. I nodded at him and smiled. He smiled back, waved; his hand and went on. My wife, who was with m°. asked. “Who was that man who spoke to you and smiled?” I replied that I 'idn't know him. had never seen him before. The other incident occured in puiipdelnhia recently, when I advertently drove in to a narrow one-..ay street irom the wrong end. I met another ear coming from thi' right direction. I smil ed at him. nodded. He smiled in return, hacked un to allow me to pass and both of us went along iii a good tiUmor. There’s an old proverb in the, Bible. “A merry heart docth j good like medicine: but a broken I spirit drieth the bones.” A smil ing man or woman has a way of getting along through life so much easier than the grouch. Recently we had an unprece dented example of a smiling little man. who even smiled when ever thing seemed to be a ainst him. He is now Presi dent of the United States. He is railed "The Smiling President.’ Why not try it?
