part in the celebration here on
Saturday for the Tobacco Fes
tival heralding the opening of the

North Wilkesboro’s 50-piece
band has been invited to lead
the parade. And the West Jef
ferson high school band under
Othe direction of Mrs. Lorene
Dickson has also been invited to

charge of dances that formal

the parade.
Funeral Is Held
k For Mrs. Miller
The funeral service for Mrs.
Ann Miller. 82. of Glendale
Springs, who died at her home
on November 20. was held at
the family cemetery at Glendale
Springs, at 2:00 n. m., Monday.
Mrs. Miller was the widow of
Elice Miller.
Survivors include four sons,
Hamp. Ambrose. Gordon, and
Joe. and two daughters, Mrs.
Mary E. Reid and Mrs. Letha
Barnes.

Recitation, Vocal, Piano,
Instrument Classes
Mrs. Harvey Payne announced
that over $90.00 was raised for
Mrs. Vannoy's section of the se
cond grade at the amateur con
test held at the West Jefferson
school. November 16. She stated
that there were over 60 entrants
in the contest.
In addition to the recitation,
vocal, piano and instrument clas
ses of competition, different
stores in West Jefferson modeled
their new styles and fashions.
Winners in the ifirst group
(age 6-12) were for recitation,
first. Patsy Ann McMillan: se
cond, Joan Hardin and third.
John Marsh. Reva Hopkins won
first place in the vocal class with
Sara Henry McLaurin. second,
and Nancy Hughes, third. Dot
Hughes won the first place in
piano and Lois Ann McMillan,
second, and Jackie Sheets, third.
Shirley Bumgarner won the first
place in the instrument class
with Billie Anderson, second.

Band Is Active
The.' North Wilkesboro High
School band, under the direction
of Miss Eva Bingham, which has
been invited to play for the To-,
bacco Festival here on Satur
day. has had an active season.
The band which is composed
of 4(1 pieces and seven majorettes
has already played for a number
of high school football games and
one parade this fall. This group
also played at the Davidson
Washington Lee game.
Within the next few weeks
this band is scheduled to play
for the Lions and Kiwanis Clubs
in North Wilkesboro. the Christ
mas cnndloliL'ht service and dur
ing the Shrine Bowl Game in
Charlotte.

Buried On Mon.

Died On Sunday Following
Serious Illness; Was
Well Known
The funeral service for Mrs.
Sarah Rhodes, of Warrensville,
who died in the Ashe hospital on
Sunday, was held Monday after
noon at the Warrensville Me
thodist church and burial was in
the family cemetery. The service
was conducted by Rev. J. L. A.
Bumgarner, of Warrensville and
Rev. Hoyt Wood, of West Jeffer

Mrs. Rhodes, who was 96 years
of age at the time of her death,
was the widow of James II.
Rhodes.
She is survived by four sons,
John and Jack Rhodes, of West
Jefferson. Claude, of Pennsyl
"ania. and Martin, of Warrens
vilie. and one daughter. Eliza
beth Rhodes, of Warrensville.
She was one of the best known
