Bob White Quail Protected
By Planting Cover Seeds
Bobwhite quail in North Caro-'
lina will benefit by plantings of
two and one-half tons of lespe
deza seeds and more than a mil
rose plants throughout the State j
as a part of the Wildlife Resour-1
ees Commission's game habitat1
restoration program, according
to Clyde P. Patton, Executive'
Director of the Wildlife Resour
ces Commission.
When planting operations are
completed some time in April, a
total of 340 acres of bicolor les-j
pcdeza and over 200 acres of seri
es lespedeza will have been
planted on farms in various parts
of the State. The total acreage of
lespedeza plantings is divided in
to individual cover strips 400
feet long and 15 feet wide.
Multiflora rose, an oriental
shrub, which has this year been
introduced as a game cover
plant in North Carolina, is be
ing planted on a test basis.
About 55,000 linear feet, or ten
and one-half miles of multiflora
seedlings are being planted on
nine demonstration areas and
on hundreds of individual farms.
A single row of multiflora plants
is sufficient to produce a living
fence several feet wide and tall
and dense enough to hold live
stock within an enclosure of the
plantings. At the same time mul
tiflora produces ideal quail and
rabbit cover.

Fiddlers Meet
At Union Grove
The Union Grove Fiddler’s
Convention will observe its 2f)th
1 anniversary Saturday night at
,8:00 at the school, located 20
states from which bicolor lespe
dc/a was ordered for this year's
planting program, only about
one-fourth of anticipated plant
ing stock was actually delivered.
This shortage made necessary a
reduction in planting operations
this year, but plans are already
under way to prevent future
shortages of planting stock.
The Wildlife Resources Com
mission is leasing enough land
in five acre blocks in widely
scattered sections of the State to
produce 4,000.000 bicolor lespe
deza and multiflora rose plants
each year. By locating the five
acre nursery plots in widely
separated areas the danger of
crop failure due to drought will
be greatly reduced. As often
happens. North Carolina may
suffer from severe drought in
one part of the State while oth
er sections get adequate rainfall.
Another advantage of strategi
cally located nursery plots will
be a reduction of the distance
necessary to haul the plants!
from the nursery beds to farms'
where plantings are to be made.
The Commission's planting
program is a cooperative affair.
Three-fourths o^ operational
costs for the habitat planting
projects are pa id from federal
funds and one-fourth from the
game fund. The Commission
works in close cooperation with
District Conservationists of the
Soil Conservation Service and;
with sportsmen and individual
farmers who are interested in I
planning for wildlife on their
land.
Initial plans for the develop- '
merit projects called for the es
tablishment of demonstration
areas in various sections of the
State which are designed to show
the benefit of habitat phmtings
to wildlife and as soil conserva
tion measures. At present nine
large demonstration areas, each
approximately 1.900 acres in
size, are in operation. Addition
al areas of this size will lx- os
tablished only where the need
for such areas is clear. Actually,
all of the plantings manic on the
hundreds of individual farms in
the State serve to demonstrate
the value of wildlife food and
cover development. Farmers
and sportsmen alike have been
quick to see the advantages of
wildlife plantings, and the indi
vidual demand for seeds and
seedlings far exceeds the supply
of planting materials.
The current supply of plants
and seedlings is being stretched
as far as possible among cooper
ators in the program, and no
more applications for seeds and
nursery stock for this year can
be considered. Applications will
again be considered in October,
1949, and the applications will
be considered on a first-come -
first served basis. An effort will;
be made to distribute plants and
seeds as evenly as possible
throughout the State. j
Planting stock for wildlife
habitat is distributed free of
charge to cooperators. Require
i ments are simple: iand owners
j who have suitable areas on their
I farms for developing, receive
plants and seeds free of charge,
I agree to plant them according
[ to the best interests of wildlife,
land protect them from fire, graz
1 ing and other hazards.
miles north of Statesville. ,
Three halls will be used this
year and the musicians will ro- j
tate between the buildings. H.
P. Van Hoy, veteran fiddler, will
be in charge of the convention.
Only instrumental bands can^
participate. i
