I | MURDERER’S REWARD | J (A Short Story) BY BICHABD HILL WILKINSON ;; Wally Donato carefully wiped i off the automatic and placed it i in the hand of the dead man. The : dead man’s name was Lynn Og-1' den. He had been Wally’s busi- j ness partner. So lar the thing had gone off, with r.o deviation from the man-; ner in which Wally had planned. Tjfc greatest possibility of a slip upMiad been overcome bv Lynnsj wholly unsuspecting attitude. Ten minutes ago Wally had ( stepped into Lynn’s office and i found his partner finishing last; details before going home. Lynn had looked up mildly curious had nodded, and bent over his desk once more. And Wally had, calmly drawn the automatic from his pocket, aimed it at Lynn’s temple and as calmly pulled the1 trigger. I He listened for a moment to! make sure no one had heard thej shot sr.d was coming to investi-j gate, even though he knew the; office force had long since de parted. j Presently he removed a hand-' kerchief from his pocket and wip ed hi? automatic with careful do- j liberation. He had to steel him-! self to the business of Inserting the weapon between Lynn’; fing-j ors. ^ j 'Suicide!" he muttered. "There, isn’t a possibility of their advanc ing sr. thor theory, and even if they cio they won't know whom to suspect." ^Vai’y's attitude was almost jUntv as he walked over to the safe sr.d spun the dials. The hcavv door swung back and Wally drew up a chair to! make himself comfortable while sorting lit the papers he wanted. He found them without the least difficultv. Securities worth thou sands! And no one save Wally and I.vnn was aware of their preserve heia Their removal, theref. re. could never arouse suspica r. He restored other tilings in the safe : their pr >per order, first wiping each article carefully to lag ve any fingerprints. Presently he stood up. a satis : !. .■!- h.s lace ana return; 1 the eha'r t 1 its former posit on. 11; giarced at h.s watch. Five :exactly. Tin wh> !e busi * less had taken less than 30 reun ites. And there had not been a ingle hitch, not one disturbing actor. The task had been tom ileted in exact detail as he had ilanned. I He turned and looked about he room. There was plenty of ime. Lynn’s body would not be iiscovered until the next morn-, ng. It was best now to make sure! hat no possible clue remained.! ind with this mind he made a slow, scrutinizing tour of the •oom. | Poor Lynn! What an utter, stu ud fool the man was! Well, that’s .chat you get for trusting every rom, Dick and Harry who comes ilong. A shrewder man — a man ,vith Wally's brains, for example —would have forseen this possibi ,ity and guarded against it. ] The picture of Lynn lying !here. face down on the desk, ,vas certainly realistic enough. A'ally told himself. No profession-: il could have done a beter job.I 1’he bullet had entered his right :emple and the wound was sur rounded by powder burns — a sure-fire factor in establishing a ■suicide theory. The automatic a as clutched in the dead man's Kind with the forefinger wrap led around tire trigger. It could Vt look more genuine Wally smiled to himself again ind turned away. It was then that i most surprising thing happen 'd. To an observer it would have! ip neared weird, miraculous, tin-; ranny. | Wally had taken one step to-[ card the door, when the auto-1 it at ie. resting in the lifeless fin-j tors of Lynn Ogden, exploded., rhere w;s a roar, a burst ef| lame. Lvnn’- hand jerked off lesk and the automaie went Mattering to the floor. The noise made by its fall was ost by a greater noise — that produced by the terrific impact if Wally Donato's heave frame; ’rashing against a chair to the liH r. the sound of an agonized tv. a cry that presently died on i:s lips ...
