South Boston Defeats Roxboro.
The Roxboro ibase ' ball v team
was defeated by: South Boston
last Thursday af teraopn by the
score of 8 to 4, on the South Bos
ton Grounds, r Messrs; r Malone
and Barnette made up the bat
tery for Roxboro. iMalone was,
relieved in the latter part of the
game by Burley Clayton. The
game was lost to ! Soutli Boston

port Read To Board Finances

In Good Shape.
The Board of Education were
in their regular July meeting
Monday, with all members pres
ent. The minutes of the last meeting
were read by the' Superintendent
and approved by the board.
Mr. Allen of No. 3 Bushy Fork
came before the board and asked
permission to move the school
building near the public road. The
school is now situated on his farm
and not so near 'the road. The
board agreed to allow this provid
ing Mr. Allen paid the expenses
of same. 1
Mr. Yarboro of Flat River No.
2 appeared before the board and
requested that another room be
added to this school. It was order
ed by the board for same to be
done provided half the cost was
paid by the people of that district.
' Dr. Coleman of Bushy Fork No.
4 also asked for an additional room
for this school.; It was agreed by
the board to allow same and pay
half the C0St, the people of the dis
trict paying the other half.
The Woodsdale colored schools
"wishedjo be consolidated, and
committemen appeared before the
board in this behalf. It was left
up to the Superintendent to inves-
p A erood number of committemen,
Whose time expired this year, were
re appointed. The school census
takers were also appointed at this
meeting.
The financial and statistical re
ports were read to the Board by
Supt. Beam. The finances of the
schools are in good shape and next
year the board will begin in better
shape.
The financial statement of the
Board of Education will be pub
lished in a later issue of The Cou
rier. It was the pleasure of, the writer
to be able to attend most of the
Meeting Monday. The interest in
the schools of Person county is
grjowing rapidly and people of the
county are awakening to absolute
necessity of educating their ' chil
dren. More rooms are being asked
by the different , committeemen
and more children are attending
regular.
The reports of the office are
kept in excellent shape. Any citi
zen of the county may get any in
formation pertaining to the school
from the Superintendent, who
will be glad, to give you same.

Bids were received Monday
for the remodeling of the build
ing of Harris & Burns. The
work will begin at once and
when-completed will be one of
the handsomest store buildings
m Roxboro. Thei improvements 1
will cost around $6,000 and work
is to be completed some time in
September.
During the remodeling of their
store, Harris & Burns will be
temporarily located in the build
ing formerly occupied by the
firm of Clayton, Long & Long.
