son, of Carrboro, was tried for ob
taining marriage license by false
representation and perjury for the
marriage of Miss Moline Hughes
of Carrjooro. On Saturday night
before the defendant applied for
license, representing the young
lady was 19 years of age. M r. R.
M. Webb. Deputy Register of
f Deeds, not being willing to issue
license upon the statement of
Swanson and his witnesses was re
quested to talk over the phone to
the father of the girl at Carboro,
As to his willingness for her to
marry. The defendant or some of
his friends called up Mr. R. A.
Hughes over long distance and
had Mr. Webb to talk to someone.
but it turned out that it was not
Mr. Hughes and that a scheme
had been devised by the defend
ant and his friends to mislead the
Register of Deeds. The evidence
disclosed that the party talking
at the other end of the lin was a
brother-in-law of the defendant at
Carboro, . who represented over

Clement Revival.
A revival meeting will begin at
Clement Church July 16. Dr John
E. Briggs, of Washington, D. C , .
will do the preaching. This is his
home church and a great meeting
is expected.
Dr. Briggs graduated at Mercer
University, Ga., and the Baptist
Seminary, Louisville, Ky. He has
held pastorates in Greensboro and
Atlanta, Ga., and for the past sev
en years has. been in Washington,
D. C. During his pastorates in At
lanta and Washington he has re
ceived more than two thousand in
to the church. His influence in the
church councils is national in
scope. He comes to the meeting in
great hopes of accomplishing much
among his native people, and de
sires everybody interested in the
community to help in every possi
ble way. He has prepared an in
;eresting program for the meeting
