Coopera tion irv selling dairy products, when properly developed and managed will ? increase ita returns, but efficient production of milk is the most im portant factor in succesful dairying. "Efficient production is still with in the cotrol of the individual dairy - taan," says John A Arey, dairy ex tension specialist at State College. "Thla factor is not. .lepondr^t on group action. If all the flilryrtlfen of the State knew exactly what it wa scosting them to produce milk, the danger of over-production would be gfreatly reduced. There would be I no surplus at any of our large milk markets if th?* unprofitable cows ?were slaughtered." Mr. Arey states that the benefits cf a cow-testing .association in sho\^> ing which cows are profitable and which are unprofitable cairn >t b? over-e^tfmHtei^ He states that a striking example of this was .seen in the case of a Virginia dairyman who was milking 36 cows and found' that he was not making money. As a result of cow-testing w-rk, the herd was divided into two groups )jf 18 cows each. The results of the testing showe dthat one group of 18 cows was returning a profit while the ofcber 18 animals were net pay ing for the feed consumed. A further study of the records showed that these 18 unprofitable cows pir.duced . 71,000 pounds of milk for a city which already had an o^er-1 supply of market niilk and tfce price of milk produced by the 18 profitable cows wa* thus depressed by the poor producers. The. problem of the dairy man was then simple bu the did not know about it until the records made it clear, states Mr. Arey. The rem edy wa snot merely to put in more DR. J. H.
