Edgecombe Farmer Lives at Home WhiUkers, N. O., No*. 29.? The recent break in the price of cotton brines to l^rht that mafiy North i Carolina farmers supposedly ihaking 1 their entire cash income from cot,- ' ton are living at home and are r.ot j tremendously worried about the fut ure. Such a famer is J. Luther Brake who lives near Rocky Mount in livebb mm v-^ Edgecombe County- Mr. Brake be gan farming 17 years ago at the age of 21 whip his father gave him 47 acres of land. He built an unpreten tious little home, married and start ed out to make a Jiving:. The home has always been kept spotless and clean a|.d the farm wll balanced with money and food craps. The ex cess of the food and feed crops has been sold for cash. * Mr. Brake has never planted more than three to five acres of cotton, about what tobacco he could handle safely and has always had. a year around garden, a few cows, chickens, and some hogs. He has. grown some tfuck crops to add to his income, especially sweet potatoes of excel lent qality. His cured meats are noted for their quality as well as his surpl* butter j^nd milk. It is against the law of the Brake clan to by feed "and Mr. Brake has always ^ produced on the home farm what his stock reeds for food. Sail improvement, too, is practiced ob this farm. Mr. Brake grows Bur and Crimson , clover, some v?ivet beafrts and soybeans, and while he is making a good income he is also im proving his land. According to County Agent Zens' Moore, with whom* Mr. Brke has al ways worked, a new and m^re com modious home has been built, two small tracts of land were recently added to the farm and Mr. Brake had enogh cash to pay down that | he would not be embarrassed by his purchase. He has always lived in dependently of debt and states that prosperity and camfort for farmers may be 'obtained by the "eviL'ut may be obtained by the "Live-At jHome" plan as advocated by the workers of the Agricultural Exten sion Service. Ashe County Grows Fine Quality Sheep Raleigh, N. Nov. 29. ? 'Ashe* County i sone of the best naturally adapted livestock sections in North Carolina according to Prof. R. S. Curtis of the animal husbandry de partment at State College, who re cently spent a week in this county with the farm agetit E. C. Turner, Junior, holding a series of meetings in . the interest of beef cattle produc tion.. % Mr. Crtis has been studying live stock conditions over North Carolina for about fifteen years and during that time, he has traveled over all ? His work | has carried hhn to Ashe County . many times, and he states that the | coutoty has always had ftfie beef ! cattle and excellent sheep. There are' 71 ow some 18,000 head of sheep list- 1 ed on the ta* books of the county,] Nearly all of thes animals are high-5 ly bred because the growers have j used pure bred rams for many years. "In my opinion, the sheep of Aohe County will compare favorably with the sheep of Ohio," spys Pr:f. Cur tis. "Ohio has long been rated as one uf the best sheep producing | state son the Continent consider in*r the matter from the farm stand point. I have found the sheep in Ashe County to be of just as pood quality and to produce just as pood woo! as those from the Buckeye State." Prof. Curtis states that there has been a slackening of interest in beef cattle in the mountain section be cause of the low prices for beef dur ing the past few years. A number of old beef .cattle growers have t;one into the dairy business but there now appears to be an awakening of in terest in this work also and some of the mOre favorably located land owners will begin to give more at tention to beef cattle. However thiit may be, he states, it is generally ac cented that the sheep industry is on a firm foting and will expand great ly in the next two or tjiree year*.
