SUMMER EGG
LOSS MAY BE
LESSENED
A toll of $45,000,000 a year is lost
by the American poultry industry
as a result of improper methods of
producing and handling eggs, ac
cording to data compiled by C. F.
Parrish, extension poultryman at
State College.
This staggering loss can be great
ly reduced by removing male birds
from the flocks when not needed for
breeding purposes, gathering the
eggs more often, caring for them
properly, and observing other me
thods of good flock management.
Fertile eggs will start .hatching
when exposed to sufficient heat for
a short time, but Infertile eggs may
be left In a temeprature Of 103 de
grees fahrenheit for 72 hours and
still be good for food.
Healthy, vigorous males removed
from the flock should be penned
separately and saved for breeding
purposes the next season. The
other males should be disposed of,
since they will eat more food than
they are worth if kept over the non
producing season.
In hot weather, eggs should be
gathered at least twice a day in wire
baskets and immediately removed to
a cool celler or room where the tem
perature is 68 degrees or less and
where there Is a relatively high hu
midity. The eggs should then be
spread on a table or wire screen
so as to cool thoroughly before be
ing packaged.
The use of good nesting material
and proper sanitation around the
hen houses will decrease the num
ber of dirty eggs produced. Many
good eggs are sold at low prices sim
ply because they do not look fresh
and clean.
At' least 20 nests. 12 by 12 by
14 inches, should be provided for
each 100 laying hens. The nesting
material should _be changed fre
quently.

Baer-Carnera Fight
A complete ring-side account of
the greatest fight of the century.
The- two meet, rather inauspic
iously, <5n a bus leaving Miami.
Gable notes with growing concern
the girl's apparent helplessness and
takes her under his wing. Missing
the bus at a stop-over, they decide
to hitch-hike the rest of the way.
In the large supporting cast are
Walter Connolly, as Miss Colbert's
irate father; Roscoe Karns, a travel
ing salesman who puts Claudette "on
the make," rather unsuccessfully;
Ward Bond as the bus driver, and
Blanche Prederlci, Alan Hale, Jame

in minor but important roles.
VOICE CREATES
MUSIC CAREER
ROSS RESENTED
Lanny Ross, the young radio singer,
making his screen debut in Para
mount's "Melody in Spring," which
comes for Special Shows Friday j
night and Saturday morning to the |
Palace, became a singer because he '
was forced into it.
The popular tenor, who is featur- J
ed in this mirthful, musical, love
, story with Charlie Ruggles, Mary
Boland and Ann Sothern, revealed
recently that he once actually de
tested the idea of ringing for any |
thing but his own amusement. *
In spite of this, his career start
ed early. He knew music even De- j
fore he could walk. His mother was
Pavlowa's accompanist, and natur- j
ally played in her home.
When Lanny was seven, he be-'
came a member of the choir in the
Cathedral of St. John the Divine,
in New York.
He had a scholarship to Taft
school, in Watertown, Conn., and
gravitated into the Glee Club. He
went to Yale and the same thing
happened. He paid his way through
Columbia Law School by singing on
the radio;
Eventually Ross became reconciled
to being a singer, and started tak
ing voice lessons. Now his ambition
is to be a concert singer.
When automobiles travel at speeds
in excess of 60 miles an hour, more
power is required to overcome air
resistance than road resistance.
Jack Holt In "Black
| Moon" Here Saturday
[ Starring Jack Holt, Columbia's
"Black Moon" comes Saturday to
the Palace Theatre.
This is the screen adaptation of ,
the popular Cosmopolitan maga
zine story, "Haiti Moon," by Cle
ments Ripley, a tale of voodoo wor
ship in a West Indian island.
Fay Wray and Dorothy Burgess
are in the principal supporting roles.
