Coming Attractions At The Palace Jean Harlow Makes Hit With Calif. Police Pasadena Cops Liked Star So Much They Made Her "Honorary Chief". They "mugged" platinum-blonde Jean Harlow at the Pasadena, Calif.1 police station before she finished her starring role in the new Mero Goldwyn-Mayer picture, "The Girl from Missouri" which is to be seen Monday and Tuesday September 11 and 12 at the Palace Theatre. She was photographed and fin gerprinted by the police, not be cause she had violated any of the Crown City's laws, but because she had previously broken an important) engagement to appear as honored' guest at the Pasadena police depatr ment ball. Her presence at the festivities had aided in making the ball the most successful in the history of the Pasadena department. . . so thej bluecoats rewarded her by appoint ing her honorary police chief of the city. Awarded Gold Badge The ceremony took place at the police headquarters, where Police Chief pinned a chief~'s~gold badge on her. He told her she shall al-j ways be honorary chief of the de partment during her absence from the city and active chief whenever she visits Pasadena. But to become "Chief" she hadi to go through the same rigid rou- | tine to which all law enforcement' officers must submit. She was fin gerprinted. then?in the same Id-, entification Bureau, even in the came chair where Pasadena's mostj notorious criminals had been pho tographed? the blonde star was "mugged" frontwise and sidewise. Adm. 10-Mc EXPERT CALLED FOR GUIDANCE IN "PURSUED" First White Child Born In Borneo Now Gives H^^nood Help Those whose enjoyment of mo tion picture includes noting tech nical errors probably will meet dis appointment when they see "Pur sued," a dramatic story of British North Borneo, which comes to the Pafece Theatre on Thursday Sep tember 6th. When the writing of the story was assigned, John Arensma. na tive of Borneo, was engaged in the capacity of technical advisor. - Of- Dutch parentage, Arensma was the first white child born in British North Borneo and he now uses, for business purposes, the surname, Datu, meaning "white child," given him by the Malay na tives. The attire of Rosemary Ames. Victor Jory. Pert Kelton, Russell Hardie and the other players in the cast, the streets, houses and other settings were checked by Arensma to insure authenticity. "Few persons realize the size of the Dutch East Indies," , he says. "Borneo itself is the largest island on the globe and throughout the Dutch East Indife theer are 60,000. 000 Malays governed by approxi mately 100,000 Dutch. .The popu lation of Holland is only 7,000.000." Eight years ago, Arensma, a victim of malaria, was carried abroad a boat, went to Hollywood, regained his health, and entered technical advisory work in motion pictures. "Pursued" was produced by Sol M. Wurtzel and directed by Louis King. It is based on a story by Larry Evans. o Human Stories Like "Housewife" Catch Interest Of Public So-called "human stories" do not run in cycles, but burst suddenly and obtrusively into the midst of other cycles. This has been the his tory of the American stage. "Peg o' My Heart" came in the midst of a cycle of very heavy "?dramas"; "Abies' Irish Rosef' stepped into the middle of a mvs tery rage; "Seventh Heaven" walk ed in calmly to disturb a run of problem plays. ? Whatever a novelty-seeking pub lic seem to want temporarily, it invariably settles back to the simple things that do not tax its credul ity. Recent pictures definitely mark a trend toward this simple human story. Warner Bros, which has gone as' far as any other producer toward the ultra-modern and sophisticated is also among the first to recognize the tendency. Two of their recent} films,, "As ,th<T Earth Turns" and "The Merry Prink" Were plain j stories of plain people. Public re- j sponse to these was so favorable they produced "Housewife," which comes to the Palace' Theatre on Friday September 12th. "Housewife" is the story of a wife who inspired her husband to, win success and then sees him turn ot a se'H w romewdddwjwd d dd j to a more flashy woman George Brent, Bette Davis, Ann Dorak, are the three members "of the triangle while others in the cast include John Halliday. *RqM Donnelly, Hobart Cavanaugh. Rob ert Barrat, Joe Cawthrone and Phi] Regan, -j Alfred E. Green directed the production from the screen play by Manuel Seff and Lillie Hay ward, based on the story by Robert Lord and Miss Hayward. Margaret Lindsay New Type Actress; , Beauty With Brains Screen actress, '1934 variety, she might be called?this lovely young Margaret Lindsay' who plays oppo site Warren William in "The Drag on Murder Case," the First National production which comes to the Pal ace Theatre on Wednesday, Sept. 12. There's nothing sensational or flamboyant about Margaret. She typ ifies the newer group of film young sters who now hold forth in Holly wood?well-bred, intelligent, poised, and intent on making good in the profession she has chosen for her own. Margaret is sociable, but not particularly social. She goes places because she knows she'll have a good time?and not because she should be seen there. ( She lives conservatively and sayes sant with many subjects that would have been so much Greek to the fluffy-brained ingenue of early film . days. i She liyes conserfatively and saves a good part of her salary. She never expects to own a Rolls-Royce as long as Fords are being made. "The Dragon Murder Case" is the most baffling and exciting cf all the mystery thrillers by the fa mous author, S. S. Van Dind.
