Sunday School Lesson By Rev. Charles E. Darn THE CHRISTIAN AND HIS BIBLE Lesson for Oct. 14th. Acts 8:26-39 Golden Text: Psalm 119-97 The story of Philip and the Ethio pian is very appealing. The picture tof the eunuch seated In his chariot reading the prophecy of Isaiah, with the apostle beside him in the act of interpretation, appeals strong ly to one's imagination. Now many folk today are quite as puzzled when they read the Bible as was this Zthlopian. Their prob-, lem may be stated as follows. "Why should we go to the Bible for guid | ance, a book written centuries ago when life was so vastly different? Why not face our perplexities head on, with, our own vigor of mind and soul?" Prof. Mary Lyman, of Union Sem inary, has given an effective ans wer. She points out that the Bible has the advantage over contempo rary culture in that it presents the issues of life in a simple and vivid form. In 3ible times folk lived and thought more directly and naturally than they do now. It is a genuine help to begin with a simple, clear outlook of the Good Book. Then, .too, the Bible is essentially picturesque and, dramatic. We.can easily agree with Mrs. Lyman that pictures and drama are more con vincing than argument, however skilful. Think of the amazing 'suc cess of the Negro Bible play, "The Green Pactures," which ran for o full year and a half in New York before packed houses. And we must remember that the Bible, in striking fashion, combines successfully the particular and the universal. Although written thou sands of years ago from an entirely different background from that of today, it is as fresh and timely as ever. Let us then learn to love the Book of Life until we can say with a full heart our Golden Text, "O how love I thy law! It is my meditation all the day."
