John Ruf, eighteen months old, Jersey City, showed a score of persons what real grit is. He sat in the middle of road In Bayonne after au automobile accident, and smiled, although his left lex was torn to shreds. His mother, Mrs. Catherine Ruf, thirty-flvc, is dying In the same hos pital. Mrs. Ruf, accompanied by three of ber neighbor's children, attempt ed to cross the street. She was car rying baby John in her arms and had one of the other children by a hand. An automobile owned and driven by Mrs. Margaret Kiver, forty, Bayonne, appeared. Mrs. Ruf pushed the three children to safety but the machine struck her and the baby. Mrs. Kiver, after treatment for cuts on the face, was arrested on a charge of homicide. Badly decomponod body of ;t young woman was found in a room at the Hotel Emery on East Ninth street. The woman, apparently about 26 years of age. had registered at the Iiotel ln April as Mrs. y F. Yoder, but letters found in her possession were addressed to Miss Mary Clem onts. Sba had been dead two-Vlays. The woman is believed to have ta ken poison. Letters were found In the room from Sergt. W. F. Yoder. formerly at (lamp Kunwton. Kan., but later transferred to Casip Beau regard, 1. She Ih believed to have been employed here us a cigar clerk. No motive is known for her deaUi.
