Friday evening Oct. 26th, the Philological Club held its regular monthly meeting at the home of Prof. Toy. Prof Geo. S. Wills read a paper entitled "A Synopsis of Gummere's Introduction to the Old English Ballads." A number of probable theories of the origin and growth of ballads and national poe try were given and discussed. It was shown that the farther back we go in the history of our poetry the more insignificant does the in dividual become, until in communal poetry individualism entirely disap pears. The ballad proper belongs to that period in which whole com munities possessed of the same thought and feelings are similarly moved under the same circum stances. At the close of the paper the question as to where individual authorship came into our national poetry was discussed by the differ ent members of the club present. The club adiourned at 8:30 without completing its business, in order to attend the lecture or Dr. Graham. The meeting will however be con tinued on Friday evening of this week, when the unfinished business of the previous meeting will be resumed. Some Late Games. . Yale 12, West Point 5. The Tennesseeans downed the Kentucky players after hard work, only. The Setvance Times says, "Vanderbilt's gains were mainly through the line, where she was particularly strong. The game was marked by consider able fumbling on Vanderbilt's part, and slow play. At the same time, she showed solidity at the centre. and a good, strong trio of backs.
