I am glad to give the editor of the
Tar HEEL- the following informa
tion. The General Athletic Asso
ciation includes two departments
only foot ball and base ball. It
seems to be attending fairly well to
its duties along- these lines at least
the captains and managers have
worked hard. The Tennis Associa
tion is a separate organization and
will doubtless respond pleasantly if
punched up.
Every effort has been made to in
terest the, students in gymnasium
work. It is apparently the most
unpleasant duty they have to per
form and the one most shirked. The
Athletic Committee will allow no
Field day or Track contests.. unless
the men entering for them train at
least two months. Last year and
the year before Track Captains
were appointed without result. The
student body must take this matter
in hand for the future. .
As to the committee on, athletics,
you are correct as to its composition
but entirely wrong as to its turning
out teams, etc. . It makes no effort
to turn out teams. That lies quite
beyond its province. It is not a
creature of the General Athletic
Association but of the University.
It has control of all athletic contests
at the University or away from it
so far as the advisability . of their
taking" place, date, etc. , are concern
ed. The Athletic Association has
also requested it to supervise the ac
counts of its managers and treasur
ers. Beyond this, its functions are
advisory. It is always willing to
help in any possible way but de
clines respectfully the responsibili
ty of turning out teams or of supply
ing enthusiasm and push for the
various sports.
